On September 19, 2020, the "Expert Consensus on rational use of Osteoarthritis" (hereinafter referred to as the Consensus) jointly sponsored by the Sports Medicine Branch of the Chinese Medical Association and the Sports Medicine Professional Committee of the Orthopedic Physicians Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, and co-organized by the Editorial Department of the Chinese Medical Frontier Journal (Electronic Edition) of the People's Medical Publishing House, was successfully held in Beijing. The consensus was jointly initiated by Professor Chen Shiyi, Chairman of the Sports Medicine Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, Director of the Institute of Sports Medicine of Fudan University, Director of the Department of Sports Medicine of Huashan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University, And Chair-designate of the Orthopaedics Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, Director of the Joint Surgery Center of the Medical Department of Xi'an Jiaotong University, and Professor Wang Kunzheng of the Department of Osteoarthritis Surgery of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University, aiming to further standardize the clinical rational use of osteoarthritis.

The meeting was chaired by Professor Li Jian.
Professor Chen Shiyi pointed out in his speech that osteoarthritis is one of the common diseases that seriously affect the quality of life of patients, and drug treatment occupies an important position in the clinical treatment of osteoarthritis, but the phenomenon of irrational medication is not uncommon in the treatment of osteoarthritis patients. Irrational use of drugs not only delays disease treatment and wastes medical resources, but also may produce drug-borne diseases and even drug-treated accidents. In order to more standardize the management of clinical medication for osteoarthritis, experts in related fields have been specially organized to formulate this consensus, hoping to provide practical and effective guidance and suggestions for the clinical medication treatment of osteoarthritis.

Professor Li Jian briefly introduced the background, organizational structure, preparation principles and framework of consensus formulation, and pointed out that the relevant prevention and treatment guidelines at home and abroad should be widely consulted, the latest evidence-based medical evidence should be drawn, and combined with the domestic experience in the prevention and treatment of osteoarthritis, the best clinical drug treatment plan should be given for different individuals, different disease stages and disease severity from the aspects of rationality and safety.

The participating experts had a warm, efficient and in-depth discussion, brainstormed and pooled their wisdom, further improved the framework for writing consensus, clarified the direction and focus of writing, and preliminarily determined the consensus promotion plan and division of labor arrangements. Adhering to the principles of scientificity, authority and standardization, and based on evidence-based medicine, the participating experts hope to compile an expert consensus with concise content, clear organization and useful help for clinical decision-making, and further guide the safe, effective, economical and standardized use of osteoarthritis treatment drugs to benefit more osteoarthritis patients.
