A loyal protector of the Lord: a body of hard bones, righteousness

In the seventh year of the Han Dynasty (200 BC), Liu Bang, the ancestor of Han Gao, passed through Zhao Di from Pingcheng, and Zhang Ao,the King of Zhao (Zhang Er's son, Zhang Er died in the fifth year of Han, and Zhang Ao became the King of Zhao) personally provided Liu Bang with food in the morning and evening, and the etiquette was very humble, and he performed the courtesy of his son-in-law (Zhang Ao's wife was Princess Lu Yuan, the eldest daughter of Liu Bang and Empress Lü). Liu Bang's attitude was arrogant, he was often insulted, and he was very sloppy towards Zhang Ao. Zhao Guoguo Xiangguan gao was already in his sixties at this time (Guan Gao was once a disciple of Zhang Er), very angry, and said: "Our great king is too cowardly!" He also suggested to Zhang Ao: "The world is full of heroes, and those who have the ability are the lord first, and now the king treats the emperor with great respect, but the emperor is very unreasonable to the king, please kill him for the king." Zhang Ao bit his finger and replied, "Sir is very wrong!" The first king fell to the kingdom, thanks to the emperor was able to restore, so that ender was passed on to future generations, every bit is caused by His Majesty, please sir do not say it again. Kan takami didn't make sense, so he planned to chop first and play later. He and Zhao Wu secretly found more than a dozen people and set up an assassination team, saying: "We are wrong, the great king is a loyal elder who refuses to betray morality." But we can't be humiliated, now the emperor insults the king, so if you want to kill him, our goal is to kill Liu Bang. If things succeed, the credit goes to the king; if things fail, we take responsibility for ourselves. (The matter was returned to the king, the matter was defeated and sat alone) So the assassination plan was arranged.

As a result, the group of people had not yet started to search, and Liu Bang had already set off. The assassination plan was foiled.

The next year, in the eighth year of the Han Dynasty (199 BC), Liu Bang once again swung through the Zhao Kingdom and stayed overnight in a place called Bairen County.

Guan Gao got the news, arranged for someone to hollow out a wall, and then let the killer hide in the empty wall, and told him that when Liu Bang fell asleep at night, he would kill him unconsciously. Everything was arranged perfectly, just waiting for Liu Bang, the lamb to be chopped, to lie on the board by himself.

At night, Liu Bang, who was suspicious of ghosts, finished washing up and lay on the bed and turned over and couldn't sleep. Call the shopkeeper and ask, "What's the name of this place?" "It's called Kashiwa County." "Bo people, Bo people, isn't this just forcing (harming) people, it's too unlucky." Come people, pack up your things, hurry up. In this way, in the middle of the night, Liu Bang slipped away with people and inexplicably escaped a disaster.

The killers hiding in the wall were all confused, and Guan Gao had nothing to say about it, so he could only wait for the opportunity again.

There is a saying, don't stretch out your hand, you will be caught. Trying to murder the emperor was a terrible sin.

In the ninth year of the Han Dynasty (198 BC), Guan Gao's enemies discovered their plot and reported it to Liu Bang. Therefore, Liu Bang ordered the arrest of Zhao Guo's rebels. Zhao Wu and more than a dozen other people were all vying to commit suicide, but they scolded, "Who made you do this!" Now that the king has not planned it, but wants to arrest you all, and you are dead, who will excuse the king? Therefore, the rebels and the King of Zhao were taken to Chang'an in a prison cart.

After Guan Gao was arrested, the interrogated officials flogged thousands of times, and stabbed him with an iron weapon, and there was no place to fight on his body (History: He was invincible), but still insisted that Zhang Ao, the King of Zhao, did not participate in the rebellion. When Han Gaozu found out, he thought that Guan Gao was a strong man, and asked Zhongfu to ask Guan Gao (whether King Zhao was plotting rebellion) with personal relations. Guan Gao said, "Who doesn't love their parents, wives and children?" Now that I have been exterminated of the Three Tribes, will I sacrifice the lives of my relatives in order to protect King Zhao? It's just that King Zhao really didn't plot rebellion, and the rebellion was done by ourselves. Han Gaozu was also touched to see such a scene, and his loyalty to the master was justified in this way. Therefore, he put Zhang Ao, the King of Zhao, back and prepared to reuse Guan Gao, and Xu Guan's position was thought to have been used. But Guan Gao said: "The reason why I was beaten to death and did not commit suicide was to tell the emperor that King Zhao did not rebel." Now that King Zhao has come out, my mission is complete. Moreover, the people and subjects are accused of killing the king, and what face do they have to see the emperor! Even if the emperor doesn't kill me, won't I be ashamed in my heart? When he finished, he craned his neck, squeezed his throat with his hand, and strangled himself alive (but died of suppleness). Guan Gao is of advanced age, so the method of death, almost no human being can do, perhaps, this is all the heroism and pride of the righteous, and it has been famous all over the world ever since.

For example, the Eastern Han Dynasty historian Xun Yue said in the "Han Ji" that Guan Gao took the lead in plotting rebellion and rebellion, and was a thief who killed the king. Although he sacrificed his life to prove king Zhao's innocence, small merits could not hide the great rebellion, and personal conduct could not atone for legal sins. ("Guan Gao is a thief who conspires and kills the Lord; though he can prove his king, Xiao Liang does not stop the great rebellion, and does not atone for his public sins in his private deeds.") The righteousness of "Spring and Autumn" is greatly correct, and there is no forgiveness for sins. ”)

Sima Guang, in the Zizhi Tongjian, each played fifty large plates, saying: Han Gaozu lost his subordinates because of arrogance, and Guan Gao made his master lose his original fiefdom because of his viciousness. What prompted Guan Gao to plot against him was han Gaozu's fault; it was Guan Gao's sin that caused Zhang Ao to perish. ("Gao Zu was proud to lose his subjects, and gao was fierce to kill the king.") Those who make Guan Gao rebel, Gao Zu's faults are also; those who make Zhang Ao perish the country, and the sins of Guan Gao are also. ”)

The "Chronicle of History" does not seem to have made an evaluation, and only used four words "famous in the world". Thinking of Sima Qian's praise for the assassins, he must have appreciated this in his heart, but it was not easy to say.
