"Universities deserve to be the most elegant places in the world."

At the side of Huaxia Avenue, Qunxian Hall and Siqun Hall stand four classical Roman doorposts, holding up a century of grandeur and solemnity; Lihong Bridge crosses the Riva River, Shangyi Bridge crosses the Cherry River, and the tenderness and charm of a university flow from the babbling river.

For 70 years, a kind of flowing gaze took place here. From the first socialist normal university established with the belief of "education to serve the country" to the construction of a high-level university with distinctive characteristics and outstanding advantages facing the world. The shadows of people intertwined, the bucket turned to the stars, into today's East China Normal University, buildings, rivers in history silent watch.

Walking into the school gate of Zhongshan North Road of East China Normal University, enter a straight and wide avenue, 600 meters all the way, which is for Huaxia Road - named after Daxia University and Guanghua University, the predecessors of East China Normal University.

Based on Daxia University (1924) and Guanghua University (1925), and transferred to some departments of St. John's University, Fudan University, Tongji University and Zhejiang University, east China Normal University was founded on October 16, 1951 on the original site of Daxia University.

Qunxian Hall

After entering a large lawn on the right hand side of the door, a three-storey white building is in sight, and there are 4 doorposts in the classical Romanesque architectural style in front of the main entrance, which is the oldest building in East China Normal University - Qunxian Hall, also known as the Wenshi Building. It is a witness to China's modern and contemporary history.

Qunxian Hall has a nameplate of "Former Site of Daxia University". In 1930, the first phase of the construction of Daxia University was completed under the arduous fundraising of two presidents, Ma Junwu and Wang Boqun, who went to Nanyang and raised funds from their own loans. The first phase of the building includes the teaching building "Qunxian Hall", which is the place where the Qunxian gather.

At that time, Qunxian Hall could accommodate 2,000 people to attend classes at the same time, which was almost the largest number of single architecture students in Shanghai universities. In the early days of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the school building on Zhongshan Road in Bactria was destroyed by many artillery fire, and the Qunxian Hall was retained because it was occupied as a fake Huxi Court, and only after the victory of the Anti-Japanese War did it return to the embrace of Daxia University.

Qunxian Hall accepted a large number of literati bachelors, laying the foundation for the ideological cultivation of Hua Normal University in the future. A large number of humanities giants such as Lü Simian, Shi Jingcun, Wang Yuanhua, Xu Jie, Xu Zhongyu, and Qian Gurong have all taught here. Lu Xun also gave a speech on the second floor platform of the Wenshi Building.

In 1944, Wang Boqun died of illness in Chongqing in order to move the school to the west, and in order to commemorate him, the school specially built Siqun Hall.

SiQuntang

Siquntang is also used to being called "small auditorium" by students, and for a long time enjoyed the reputation of "the best auditorium in Shanghai universities". The entrance is decorated with four Doric columns. Siquntang has witnessed various important historical stages in the development of East China Normal University, and today, the campus of East China Normal University is located here. Siquntang also forms an organic whole with Qunxian Hall and Large Lawn, which constitutes the school history style area.

From the Riva River to the Cherry River

After the founding of New China, in order to meet the needs of socialist education and the corresponding call for "cultivating millions of people's teachers", the Central Ministry of Education decided to establish a normal university with complete disciplines and high level in East China. In 1951, East China Normal University was established.

East China Normal University

East China Normal University receives a campus area of nearly 300 acres from Daxia University. At the beginning of the establishment of the school, the school decided to use the two rivers in the campus of Zhongshan North Road to design the campus with an east-west depth of 700 meters and a width of more than 800 meters from north to south as the overall layout plan of the "Nine Palace Grid", and formed three lands bounded by two rivers in the east-west direction. The area of science to the west of the Riva River and the area east of the Chishui River (Small River) is the liberal arts area.

Riva River

The common spiritual sustenance of Hedong and Hexi is probably the Riva River. The most mentioned place in the reminiscences of this East China Normal University graduate is often referred to as the context of East China Normal University.

The 1931 "Declaration" described the Riva River: "There is a river, from the north of the school, flowing through the sports field and Riva Lida Village, directly to the Suzhou River, an area of more than 60 acres, the water is deep and wide, clear to the bottom, direct vision is unimpeded, swimming scales and fine algae, reflection is interesting, the scenery is excellent." ”

The Riva River was originally part of the Wusong River (Suzhou Creek) Ancient Road, and the existing Riva River is the remnants left by the Wusong River when it was cut and straightened. After 1951, East China Normal University gradually rebuilt the river channel, filling in the U-shaped river channel into the east and west sections. The eastern section is about 400 meters long and the river is 15-30 meters wide, which is the small river from the present-day Liberal Arts Building to the Graduate School, which was once called Nanming Creek and Chishui River.

After settling in Paris for several years, the poet Song Lin wrote in a letter to a friend: "If there is really a so-called paradise in this world, it is a grass and tree, a sand and a stone by the Shida Riva River. ”

Great Summer Road

Since the 1990s, Shanghai has entered the stage of suburban development of cities and populations, and with the adjustment and expansion of universities, the "suburbanization" of universities came into being at the turn of the century. In 2002, according to the strategic deployment of the layout and structural adjustment of Shanghai universities, East China Normal University launched the planning and construction of Minhang Campus.

Another school river, "Cherry River", began to shine with the Riva River here, and after nearly 20 years of hard work, more than 1,700 acres of campus rapidly transformed, and a new chapter in the development of East China Normal University in Minhang was written here.

Cherry River

The Cherry River is a tributary of the north bank of the Huangpu River. From Yutang in the north to Huangpu in the south, it runs through the school from north to south. The Teachers likened the Cherry River to the Riva River on the Minhang Campus, and the chanting of the Cherry River kept pouring out. In particular, the "Cherry Collection, Forest Recitation" activity jointly created by the Wujing Town Government and East China Normal University is in the same line as the "Yingdou Nine Elders Society" of the Ming Dynasty, and is gradually becoming a cultural brand of Minhang, which is well received by students and Wujing citizens.

Cherry River is more than that for East China Normal University. The protozoology laboratory of the School of Life Sciences of East China Normal University collected and studied after several years of research confirmed the discovery of new species in Shangyi Lake in the Cherry River system. The ciliates are extremely tiny eukaryotes that feed on microalgae in water and have been named Naxellaparalucida by researchers in the internationally accepted Latin word – a rarity to find new species of protozoa in lively cities.

Two campuses, two buildings, two rivers, east China Normal University's "witnesses" are not only them.

Liu Fonian compiled China's first pedagogical textbook, the "Hu Huanyong Line" delineated the great discovery of Chinese geography in a hundred years, Lu Simian was listed as one of the "four major historians of modern China" with "proficient full history", Feng Qi constructed a new perspective of "wisdom theory", and there were industrial control trusted software, light clocks, photonic chips, super-limit manufacturing, green carbon science, gene editing, estuary coast and other fields to focus on the key core technologies of "card neck", "writer group", "translator group", "publisher group", "scientist group" and "entrepreneur group" Continue to grow and develop in all walks of life...
