Unbelievable! Aquatic creatures from 360 million years ago appeared in Yunnan and are still alive today

Life on Earth has a history of billions of years, and many species have become extinct in the process of time change, but there are still some species that have survived tenaciously, and even evolved with changes in the environment.

This year, Two new species of aquatic organisms were found in Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture of Yunnan Province in a survey of fishery resources across the prefecture, namely the broad-footed sharp-eyed mussel found in Qiubei County in May this year and the posterior echidna found in Guangnan County in October. Among them, it is surprising that the broad-footed sharp-eyed mussel has evolved and lived on Earth for 360 million years.

Broad-footed sharp-eyed mussels

According to the data, the broad-footed sharp-eyed mussel (Lynceus amplopedia) belongs to the suborder Bicarposauridae of the suborder Gill foot of crustaceans, the sharp-eyed mussel family. This species has a unique pectoral-foot structure. It is characterized by a pair of bimaphroditic beak ridges, wavy bumps on the front side of the head, protruding compound eyes, and deep depression in the anterior bristle area; asymmetrical left and right thoracic feet in males with left and right interchanges, flattening and broadness of the fourth, five inner lobes and inner limbs of the third to fifth thoracic feet on the specialized broad foot side, brush-like spines on the fifth and sixth thoracic feet on the fifth and sixth thoracic feet on the specialized thorny foot, scaly bumps on the sides and posterior sides of the palm segments of the holding limbs, and a broad and rounded anterior edge of the female beak, and four dorsal bulges and four marginal bulges in the hatching plate. An ancient species with a dormant egg with a short life cycle, the species has evolved and lived on Earth for 360 million years. The species was collected in October 2015 in a flooded pond in Tianxing Township, Qiubei County, Wenshan Prefecture, and after research, the paper was published in Zoological Studies in May 2019 by Shu Shuson of the Kunming Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The habitat is distributed with rare cave creatures such as twisted golden thread catfish, star plateau loach, fairy shrimp and so on.

Posterior hips

Pareuchiloglanis posteranalis belongs to the genus Catfish in the family Catfishidae, a taxon of long-tailed stalks of the great gill hole. The upper jaw tentacles are sharp and reach only the lower end of the gill hole. The head is flattened and the snout edges are rounded on the back. Mouth width, lower position, transverse. The notch of the anterior jaw teeth is wide. The ventral sides and abdomen of the head are appropriately broad and straight. The tip of the dorsal fin branch extends beyond the vertical ventral fin starting point, and the fin starting point is located between the midline of the ventral fin and the base of the caudal fin. The pectoral and ventral fins are enlarged, the edges are distinctly rounded, the first fin is significantly enlarged, and there are regular stripes on the ventral side. The pectoral fin does not reach the beginning of the ventral fin. The ventral fin extends to the beginning of the anus. The dorsal side of the living body is greenish yellow, the abdomen is milky white, and the pectoral and ventral fins are yellowish brown. The species was found at the Demonstration Site of JiulongShan Natural Sanctuary Conservation in Shitaixiang, Guangnan County, and the Provincial Aquatic Germplasm Resources Conservation Area of Tai tai Tai Salamander in Guangnan County, and the paper "Pareuchiloglanis (Teleostei: Sisoridae) from the Pearl River, China with description of three new species" was jointly published by Qiubei County Fisheries Workstation and Southwest Forestry University in SCI FISHBIOLOGY》。 This species is rare in number, and its habitat is large salamander, cryptofin catfish, plateau loach, red-tailed homer loach, liched lizard, etc., and is home to a variety of rare wild animals and plants.
