The cause of yellowing and dying lawns in autumn and winter! How to prevent it?

Nowadays, people's requirements for lawns are also getting higher and higher, and many places are such as golf courses, football fields and parklands. They all want to keep the lawn in an evergreen state. If you want the lawn to remain evergreen, use a mixed variety. For example, dwarf Bermuda, low and resistant to pruning, good adaptability to the external environment, hardiness and drought tolerance, developed root system, creeping spread, has a good role in solidifying soil slope protection. It has a certain disease resistance ability, and mixed sowing with ryegrass in winter can achieve the effect of evergreen in all seasons. It is widely cultivated on golf courses and football fields.

Lawn yellowing and death has always been the most worrying thing for lawn maintenance personnel, because sometimes lawn yellowing and death occurs in a large area in just one night or a few days, and if you are not careful, it will greatly reduce the landscape effect. Why does the lawn turn yellow in autumn and winter?

01 Diseases occur

Symptoms: Yellowing and death caused by diseases in turf grass generally has a course of onset, and mycelium will be found early in the morning at the location of the disease.

How to quickly determine whether it is caused by the onset of the disease? More than 80% of lawn diseases are caused by fungi, and some colonies and colors that can be observed by the naked eye are formed before the disease is formed. Therefore, it is easy to observe mycelium and so on at 5 o'clock in the morning. Because the leaf tips are the growth point of the grass plant, it is the most vulnerable to the bacteria; the leaves are often pruned, and the pruned wounds are susceptible to germs; the common lawn diseases in July and August are brown spot disease, summer spots, putrefactory blight, and sickle blight. The dead spots on the lawn are more than 3 cm, and the large spots can reach 3-4 m, and the spots appear to be slightly rounded.

The main diseases are: brown spot disease, total erosion disease, sickle blight and so on.

Solution: Apply less nitrogen fertilizer during the maintenance process and try not to apply urea in the summer. If there is a need for fertilization, it is recommended to spray foliar fertilizer, once the disease is found, spray the special fungicide for the lawn in time, it is recommended to respray once every 5-7 days.

02 Substantial pruning

Symptoms: In order to reduce the cost of maintenance, many people often do not prune the lawn for a long time, and seize the opportunity to prune it sharply. Due to the high temperature in the summer, excessive pruning at one time, and the lack of moisture supply, the lawn is easy to die. Generally this occurs after pruning and occurs in large areas, especially in higher places where the death is more severe.

Solution: Follow the 1/3 principle when pruning, if the lawn grows too high, it is recommended not to prune too low once, you can go through multiple pruning, each trim cut 1/3 of the leaves or height, and after pruning need to be watered in time. In summer, the mowing height can be appropriately increased by 1 to 2 cm. The recommended pruning height (stubble height) for cold-season lawns is 4 to 6 cm; the recommended mowing height for warm-season lawns is 3-5 cm.

【Trimming Skills】

1. Pruning time: It is recommended to prune after the dew dries in the morning to reduce the chance of increased bacterial invasion due to the simultaneous presence of wounds and dew.

2. When pruning each time, ensure that the blade of the lawn mower is sharp, so as to avoid the lawn leaves being torn and strained, affecting the aesthetics of the lawn and breeding bacteria. Spray the fungicide in time after pruning to avoid feeling sick by pruning the wound.

03 Drought

When the lawn grass is dried up in winter, the plant gradually withers and dies, and the leaves turn brown first, and in severe cases, they turn completely white. Winter drought takes two forms: air drying and soil drought.

Air drying: In most parts of North China, Northeast China, and Northwest China, air drying occurs basically every year. When the wind blows across the surface of the lawn, a large amount of water is removed from the grass. During the growing season, the part of the lawn grass can be replenished in time. But the frozen surface in winter hinders the transmission of moisture, leading to air drying problems. Shallow root system of turf grass wind drying phenomenon is the most serious.

Soil drought: In areas that lack rain and snow in winter, such as Beijing, if there is no timely irrigation, the grass root area of the lawn is prone to lack of water, resulting in soil drought problems. Sunny and windy weather can also exacerbate soil moisture loss, resulting in water shortage and dryness of grass roots and blades of lawn grass, resulting in winter drought damage.

Solution: Mulching is effective in avoiding or reducing damage caused by winter drought. In the absence of cover, sand covering can also play the same role. In winter management, the condition of soil and lawn grass should be checked frequently, and if drought problems are found, irrigation and water need to be replenished in time.
