Hello everyone, I'm a robin. Today, I would like to introduce you to a serious case that occurred in Canada but attracted global attention. A murderer known as the Canadian psycho, Montreal butcher, actor ogre and other titles committed this murder that the media called the most heinous murder in Canadian history.
Due to the large number of information in this case and many aspects, this article will introduce the most core information for everyone, and the analysis part will also be streamlined. In addition to media reports, the source of information also refers to the documentary "Don't Mess with Cats: The Cyber Murderer Hunt". Media coverage is a little different in detail from documentaries, so I cross-checked.

Scattered corpses
On Tuesday, May 29, 2012, at 9:30 a.m., Mike, a cleaner at the apartment building at 5720 Avenida Decari in Montreal, was cleaning up his trash when he noticed a gray canvas suitcase in the garbage heap in the alley behind the building. He looked at it one more time, thinking in his heart, he was going to lose it, why did he lock it?
(5720 Decari Avenue)
Some reports said that in fact, Mike saw the suitcase on the 25th, but there was too much garbage at that time to clean up.
Then he saw maggots crawling out of the hole above the box, thinking that the pet of a certain household was dead, and did not know how to deal with it, so he threw it out. Driven by curiosity, Mike opens the suitcase...
He immediately called the police.
When police arrived, they set up a blue tent at the scene and opened their suitcases. Inside was a male torso with a head and limbs missing.
(Luggage)
At 6 p.m. on the same day (11 a.m., some reports said), a mailed package was received from conservative party headquarters in Canada's capital, Ottawa. After the secretary at the front desk signed and opened it, the stench came to the nose, and the inside of the box had been soaked with blood, and inside was a bloody human left paw.
Since the Prime Minister at the time was the leader of the Conservative Party, the package was sent to the Prime Minister of Canada.
Through the postal system, police intercepted another package sent to the Liberal Party's headquarters, which contained the palm of a human body's left hand.
It's not just the office staff who are frightened. As soon as the news broke, the whole country was in an uproar, and the media reported that the horror movie was really staged. Police will soon witness a key clue: a chilling, numbing video.
A few days before the crime, on may 25, an 11-minute video called "One Lunatic, One Ice Pick" went viral after it was uploaded on the Bestgore.com website.
The camera is facing a bed. A white man with his back to the camera sits on the bed, and underneath him is a naked man with his hands held high above his head, fixed. It didn't take long for this seemingly sex-making film to turn into a thriller. Coldly, the man's right hand raised an ice pick and stabbed the person below him violently, up to 50-60 times. Some reports said that the ice pick was replaced in some shots with a sharp knife.
According to media reports and online descriptions, the full content of this video is that this man stabbed another man, split the body, raped the corpse, ate meat, let the dog lick the corpse, and then raped the corpse with a wine bottle.
Is this a video of a real event? Despite the controversy, the police quickly confirmed it. Because the police received a report on the 29th to investigate the scene, they watched the video that began to circulate on the 25th, and they identified some objects in the video, including the poster hanging on the bedside wall, a wine bottle, and the black and white dog, which appeared in the garbage bags at the scene. The only difference is that the dog in the video is still alive.
In addition, the technical restoration also confirms the authenticity of this video.
So, who are these two men in the video? Later in the video, there is a scene in which the violent man turns a bloody head in a bathtub with a water hog in the sound of rushing water. It was the face of an Asian man in his 30s.
(Crime scene: after cleanup)
On May 30, police announced the identities of the two men: the suspect was Luca Rocco Manota, 29, and the victim was Lin Jun, a 33-year-old international student from China.
Ice Pick Killer vs. Innocent Victims
(Lin Jun)
Lin Jun, born on December 30, 1978 in Wuhan, Hubei Province, has a younger sister in addition to his parents. In 2010, Lin Jun came to Canada to take a language course at Tyark College. In July 2011, he entered Concordia University in Canada as an undergraduate student in the Department of Computer Engineering, although he already had a related degree in the country. Media reports are inconsistent as to whether he is an immigrant.
(Lin Jun's childhood)
After school, Lin Jun works in a convenience store (Depanneur HKK). The employer said he was quiet, polite, and never argued with people. Lin Jun in the hearts of friends is gentle and sincere, positive and optimistic, and helpful. Humorous he also loves cats. In his free time, he enjoys eating with his friends, especially Korean-style fried chicken, and playing the game "Three Kingdoms Kill" together. In the documentary, his friend said that Lin Jun was shy and introverted, and was a gay man who did not come out.
(Lin Jun's shop)
At the beginning of the day of the crime, he moved to the west of Montreal and shared an apartment with friends. According to media reports, afraid that his mother was worried, Lin Jun often called home to report that he was safe.

Luca Rocco Maniota
Luka Rocco Magnotta was born on July 24, 1982 in Scarborough, Canada, and his real name is Eric Clinton Kirk Newman. Just before he was born, his 17-year-old father, Donald, married his 16-year-old mother, Anna. Luca also has a younger sister Melissa, and younger brother Conrad.
According to reports, when the children were young, their mothers, who had a habit of cleanliness, always let them wash their hands until their skin was red, swollen and itchy. It is said that Luca is 5 or 6 years old and still wearing wet diapers because his mother hates him for wetting the bed. She also left her children's pet rabbit outside the house all night and froze to death. In addition, mothers do not let their children go to school, but let them teach themselves at home. Luca did not begin schooling until the sixth grade.
(Luca's mother: Anna Yourkin)
But going to school is no better than staying at home. Due to reading and math learning disabilities, he was initially placed in special education classes. Poor study, worn-out clothes, introverted and shy, etc., Luca was not welcomed by his classmates at school. To make matters worse, he likes to play with Barbie dolls and has a tendency to be a girl, which makes him often rejected and bullied by his classmates.
After his father was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 1994, he divorced his wife, and the children have lived with their grandmother ever since.
In 1999, Luca began to have auditory hallucinations, speaking loudly, and feeling afraid for no reason, and his grandmother took him to see a psychiatrist. Luca, who was only a sophomore in high school, dropped out of school and enrolled in a mental illness institution. Since then, he has been seeking medical treatment for many years.
Two years later, he was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. By 2004, due to severe depression, Luca was told that he would have to take medication for the rest of his life, or "your life would be a mess." He was only 22 years old.
Luca's mental health also affected his work. The 17-year-old dropped out of school and worked in various jobs, but all of them lasted very quickly, often firing in weeks or months. He performs poorly and is often absent from work.
In 2003, he began shooting gay pornography films, part-time stripping and sex work, and in 2005 took photos as a model for a gay magazine.
In 2004, he met a 21-year-old girl on the Internet, but her mental strength was only 8 to 12 years old. Luca used her identity to apply for a credit card, then stole tens of thousands of dollars, and was charged and convicted of fraud. Not only that, but Luca also sexually assaulted the girl and videotaped the process. Media reports did not disclose the reason, but police ultimately did not prosecute Luca for the sexual assault.
After the 2012 case, Luca's lawyer said that if Luca had been prosecuted and sentenced that year, it might have prevented him from committing a series of increasingly horrific acts in the future, because he was likely to be imprisoned for life and forced to seek medical treatment and take medication regularly.
Luca didn't like his life at all. In 2006, with all the expectations of a repeat, he changed his name. His transgender girlfriend Barbie told reporters that Luca wants to be a model and actor, and he wants to be famous, successful and rich.
Unfortunately, it backfired. Within a year he filed for bankruptcy, saying he was sick and unemployed. In 2007 and 2008, he auditioned unsuccessfully for two tv shows.
Civilian Pioneer Survey Team
Although the police had only just learned of Luca, he was already infamous to tens of thousands of people.
The group includes Ryan Boyle, an American data analyst under the pseudonym Deanna Thompson, Joseph Panzarella, the founder of the animal protection group Rescue Ink, members of several animal protection groups in the United Kingdom and the United States, and Facebook users from around the world. They began following Luca 18 months before the crime, starting with a video of cat abuse.
in Joseph
In December 2010, a video titled "One Boy Two Kittens" caught the attention of many netizens. Luca put the 2 kittens in a transparent vacuum bag, sealed it, connected it to a vacuum cleaner, and pressed the switch. The air in the bag was slowly sucked out by the whirring of the vacuum cleaner, and 2 cats died alive from suffocation. Luca then removed the stiff kitten carcass, opened the refrigerator, and placed it on an empty shelf to display in the light.
The violence and cold-bloodedness in this video not only make cat lovers cry, but also anger animal protection groups. Overnight, more than 4,000 ordinary netizens joined a Facebook community, and even as many as tens of thousands of people at one point, dedicated to finding out the true identity of cat killers.
At that time, netizens did not know Luca. In the video, he wears a dark green sweatshirt with long sleeves and a hat, revealing only his side face and bangs.
But before the cat killer could be found, two similar videos were quickly uploaded. In the first segment, a hand grabs a kitten and sinks it into a bathtub full of water, and the camera records the kitten struggling and drowning. In the second paragraph, a kitten is placed on the bed, and soon after a large golden python slowly crawls out from under the pillow and devours the kitten.
Netizens believe that these 3 videos are from the same person.
After watching the video of the cat killing, Joseph called his sister. His sister, who specializes in crime analysis, told Joseph that the cat killer would continue to abuse animals, and that the subject of the violence would most likely escalate to a human, and that there would be more than one. In other words, the cat abuser is not only a potential murderer, but also a potential serial murderer.
They spent a lot of time searching for surveys, and at one point they found the wrong person. One day, several community netizens received a message from a pseudonymous account: "The person you are looking for is named Luca Maniota." ”
Deanna and Ryan thought the name was fake, but googled it anyway and got a completely unexpected result. With this name, you can search hundreds of web pages, hundreds of fan sites, and countless photos.
In the photo, Luca is in St. Petersburg, Paris, Los Angeles and other major cities and attractions, seemingly a rich man, traveling around the world every day, living a luxurious life. (Later, after technical analysis, it was found that the photos were synthetic.) )
But they also found a video of Luca auditioning for the show in 2007. Listening to his North American accent, plus other clues, such as the cigarette brand in the photo, the vacuum cleaner model, etc., they locked in Canada.
Finally, after a long period of investigation, netizens found Luca's true identity and place of residence and reported to the police. In 2011, Toronto police received a report and knocked on the door at Luca's rented place, only to be told that Luca had moved out.
At this point, the police didn't do anything more. Even though animal cruelty is illegal in Canada, police may have limited resources to hunt down a rumored online cat killer.
During the tracing, one Facebook user claimed that he had killed the cat. This was completely inconsistent with the clues that Deanna and Ryan had at the time, and although they both felt that it was impossible, it was too late to stop it. The young man, mistaken for a cat abuser, was subjected to cyberbullying and eventually died. Some people speculate that it was suicide, but the real cause of death is unknown, only that he was battling depression before his death.
Maybe this man just wants to get some attention in this way. Joseph said in the documentary: "We have to be very careful, and often we unconsciously become the violence we want to fight in the first place."
In fact, Alex West, a reporter for the British "Sun" newspaper, also called the police and was dismissed. West wrote an article about the video of cat abuse while publicly investigating the identity of the cat abuser. In early 2012, he interviewed Luca about the matter in a small hotel north of London, but Luca denied anything to do with the cat abuse video.
(Left: Luca; right: West)
Afterwards, The Sun received an email with a threatening tone, the main content of which was translated as follows:
“... This time, the victim won't just be a critter, but I'll send you a new video.
You see, killing is not the same as smoking... Smoking can actually be quit.
But killing, once you've tasted it, you can't stop. That kind of strong impulse makes it difficult for people to think about it or not to continue to do it.
The best thing is to watch millions of people get angry because of this, but there is nothing they can do about it, because they can't catch me.
That's why I like to engage in this. I love adventure.
It's so much fun to watch so many people work so hard to gather evidence, but they don't know who I am and can't catch me.
You see, I always have the upper hand, I have the trump card in my hand, and I'm going to keep making movies.
The next time you hear from me, it's going to be a movie I made, and there will be some people in the movie, not just kittens. :)...”
The pseudonymous e-mail was later confirmed to have been sent by Luca.
(After receiving this email, the newspaper reported to the police)
Through luca's constant upload of photos, netizens continue to track his whereabouts. They buy various software equipment at their own expense and look for clues in the photos. In the spring of 2012, netizens found that Luca was most likely in Montreal.
Even if you do your best to find out the identity of the perpetrator and know his danger, you can't do anything. In an interview afterwards, Deanna described her mood as if she had been sitting on a needle and felt, and she had been restless all day, as if she had foreseen the storm.
Diana said the video of the madman and the ice pick "played for less than 30 seconds and I knew luca did it."
(When interviewed by West, Luca denied that he was the one in the cat abuse video.)
Hunt for borderless people
After the Lin Jun case, with the assistance of netizens led by Deanna and Ryan, the Canadian police investigation progressed rapidly. The day after the victim's body was found on May 30, police listed Luca as a suspect and released a picture of him, along with other important information, including that Luca was adept at disguise and even dressed as a woman. The police fear that Luca will get close to the unsuspecting people under various pretexts and commit another crime.
The investigation into the case quickly escalated from the original city of Montreal to a national and even global one. On May 31, Lyon, France-based Interpol, at the request of Canadian authorities, issued a "Red Notice" for its 194 member states to pursue Luca worldwide.
(Pursuit information on the Interpol website)
By this time, the French police had been working closely with the Canadian police to investigate for several days.
Luca used his passport to buy a ticket to Paris. In the airport surveillance footage, he wears a black wig and a white Mickey Mouse T-shirt on a black background, constantly playing with his hair while queuing (this is his signature action). At 13:24 local time on May 27, he left the airport and hailed a white taxi.
(Lucca at the airport)
The French police immediately sent more than 30 police officers to Charles de Gaulle Airport. According to the documentary, French police found his reservation at the Novotel Hotel, but Luca did not check in.
Using his pseudonym Kirk Trammel, he booked another small hotel on the outskirts of Paris, but he didn't stay every day. Through the Internet, Luca met and stayed in different men's homes. One of the men contacted police after seeing the media report, saying Luca had spent the night on the couch at his house.
The man said Luca was polite and seemed perfectly normal, and could not relate him to the reported behavior.
Using Luca's local cell phone number, police found the shop where he had purchased it and searched every hotel in the area near Paris. They found traces of his stay at one of them, only one step too late.
On June 3, Luca had already taken a bus from Paris to Berlin, Germany. By this time, news of Luca's killing and dismemberment in Canada had been on the front page of various countries for several days.
At 8 a.m. on June 4, Kadir, a 42-year-old German man, went to work at the Internet café where he worked and began reading the newspaper as usual.
(Kadir Anlayisli)
After reading the headlines about Luca, he thought, how can there be such a cruel person in this world? Unexpectedly, this person actually appeared soon after. It was about 11 o'clock, and Luca, dressed in a dark coat, wearing sunglasses and in a French tone, politely said to him, "Good morning, internet." ”
(Luca walking into an Internet café)
There were 36 seats in the internet café, and Kadir placed Luca in seat no. 25. With his back to the door, Cardil sat by the door and could easily observe him and his activities on the computer.
(Seat 25)
However, Kadir is not sure that the person in front of him is the globally wanted man, because he looks "completely normal". Using the excuse to clean, Kadir walked between his seats and sneaked a glimpse of Luca reading his pursuit information on the Interpol website.
On this day, eight police officers happened to be training nearby, and Kadir stopped their police car on the street (some reports said that he secretly called the police on his mobile phone on the street outside the store). Surveillance of the Internet café showed that at 13:37 in the afternoon, a column of heavily armed police fish entered the small Internet café. After 5 minutes, the group walked out quietly again, including Luca, handcuffed.
(Arrested)
Luca's arrest was simple and swift. According to media reports, police officers walked up to Luca and asked to see their documents. Luca gave them a pseudonym, but the police insisted on showing their papers. It didn't take long for Luca to give up his disguise and say, "Okay, you've caught me." ”
(The Internet café where Luca was arrested)
German police asked Canada to extradite Luca to his country as soon as possible, but no commercial airline was willing to let him fly, so they had to use Canada's military transport aircraft to transport him back on June 19. When the military plane landed, the police and media reporters were waiting at the airport.
(Escorted back to China)
Restore the site and process
In the interrogation room, Luca appeared weak and helpless, docile and courteous. Prosecutors who watched the surveillance described him as "like a puppy."
No matter how the policeman asked, he was silent, his eyes were only facing the floor, and finally he said: "I just want to remain silent." He politely asked for a sweater, or a blanket, and put it on after taking the sweater. Not long after, he asked for another cigarette, and the police agreed.
The police handed him a picture of Lin Jun, saying, "This is for [Lin Jun's] family." They need an explanation. Luca put the picture on the table, didn't look at it at all, and said he was tired. The police then left the interrogation room and let him rest.
Although Luca has never confessed the details of the crime, the police have sufficient evidence.
On May 25, Lin Jun, who never missed work for no reason, did not appear at the convenience store where he worked. After 2 days, several of Lin Jun's friends went to the store to find him, and the employer could not contact him. So my friends called the police.
They told police that at 9 p.m. on May 24, Mr. Lin also texted his friends and broke off contact after that. Friends have since called him and no one answered. On May 27, they went to Lin Jun's house to check and found that his bag was still there, the cat had not been fed for several days, and the mobile phone charger was also there, not like he was out of the door.
According to the police investigation, Lin Jun's last appearance was on the evening of May 24. Surveillance of the gates of Luca's residence showed that he and Lin Jun entered the apartment building at 22:17. Lin Jun wears a yellow T-shirt with a black and white baseball cap, while Luca wears a white T-shirt.
(On the night of the crime, the two entered the apartment building)
At 2:06 a.m. on May 25, gate surveillance showed Luca leaving the building alone, wearing a yellow T-shirt .[ 2:13 He entered the door again carrying a plastic bag and stayed in the hall for 9 seconds, looking in the mirror while brushing his hair, and half turning to look at his back, with a calm face. Police speculated that the plastic bag in his hand contained tools to clean the scene of the crime.
(Lucca left the apartment building at 2:06 a.m. on May 25)
At 2:47 Luca appeared in surveillance footage in the basement of the building. Still wearing a yellow T-shirt, he started throwing things in the big trash can again and again until 4 or 5 a.m. Later, he replaced the yellow T-shirt with a white T-shirt.
(Start throwing things)
The items that were thrown away were found by the police in more than 30 black garbage bags at the scene, including:
· a wine bottle;
· the carcass of a black-and-white puppy;
· a bloodstained pale blue blanket;
· A poster of the "Casablanca" movie that was crumpled together;
· A blood-stained T-shirt;
· Pharmacy receipt with identity and address printed on it;
· Partial corpse blocks;
· A shower curtain;
· Six murder weapons, including a pair of scissors, a chainsaw, a hammer, 2 knives with blood and skin fragments, and a screwdriver (modified to silver-gray to look like an ice pick).
So when the police searched his room, he almost threw away the items. But police found blood on mattresses, refrigerators, tables and bathrooms.
On June 5, St. George's School in Vancouver received a package containing the right paw of a human body.
(St. George's School has a long history and is one of the top private boys' schools in Canada)
Ford Creek Elementary School, also in Vancouver, also received a package containing a human body's right palm. It was later confirmed that the two packages were sent from Montreal under a pseudonym, and the left and right hands and feet that were sent separately belonged to Lin Jun.
The forensic doctor later detected a sedative that could be purchased easily in Lin Jun's blood and in the bottle, and after taking it, it worked between 1 and 3 hours, and if eaten in large quantities, it would lead to coma. In the documentary, prosecutors said they hoped that Lin Jun would not be attacked to death while he was conscious.
A note in the blood package received from Conservative headquarters said that 6 parts of the body had been scattered and sent to various places, and the killers would continue to kill. Notes were also found in the other 3 packages.
(Note from St. George's School Package)
A package note from St. George's School mentioned Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his wife, saying they "knew who this was." They screwed up completely. The note received at False Creek Elementary School read: "Roses are red and violets are blue." The police will need dental records to identify you, bitch. ”
(Note from false creek elementary school package)
On June 13, after comparing the DNA of his family, the forensic surgeon joined Lin Jun's limbs with his torso. On July 1, the Toronto law firm Raphael J. Feldstein received an unsigned fax. Based on the details provided in the fax, the police recovered Lin Jun's severely decomposed head and some pieces of his body in a pond in Montreal's Anglinon Park. On July 11, Lin Jun's body was cremated, and the funeral was held in Montreal on July 26.
(The victim's head was recovered)
Many people ask, how did Lin Jun and Luca meet?
On the night of the crime, Luca went to pick up Lin Jun at the McDonald's restaurant at the Snowdon subway station. In the surveillance, their interaction looks like a pair of ordinary friends, polite, neither the laughter and laughter of friends, nor particularly intimate. When entering the apartment building, Lin Jun helped open the door and let Luca, who was carrying a plastic bag in his hand, go first. When entering the second door, Lin Jun stopped to the side, waited for Luca to get the key, opened the door, and the two walked closely, but there was no physical contact at all.
At the trial, the defense lawyer said that the two were in a relationship, and Lin Jun died of SM manslaughter (ice love). Ice love is a type of SM (sadomasochism) that has two interpretations. One is necrophilia, and the other is that during the process of sex, the abuser will make the (voluntary) abused person in a state of near-death, thereby obtaining sexual pleasure.
The media is divided into opinions on this. Some reports say the police agree with this claim. Other reports said police could not determine from the two men's phone calls and online chat records that they were in a relationship.
None of Lin Jun's friends knew he had other boyfriends, nor did anyone know that he knew Luca. According to reports, 12 days before the incident, Lin Jun broke up with her ex-boyfriend, but the two had a friendly relationship and often contacted by text message. Lin Jun knows his friends very well, and his friends know that he is gay, so if Lin Jun does fall in love with Luca, there is no reason not to tell them.
After being arrested, Luca told her mother that they were just dating. But in the documentary, Deanna dug up a search advertisement that Luca posted on the Internet a few days before the crime, to the effect that:
I'm making a solo film and need an actor.
You have to be between 18 and 35 years old, sexy and handsome. I made and played the film myself, so there was no pay. Please send a photo of your face and body.
Note: No reply if you don't send a photo.
And also! Non-about guns, no oral sex!
Even if the two knew each other before the crime, Lin Jun must know very little about Luca, for example, Luca may be well disguised in reality, and the two may become friends. Otherwise, how could a cat lover want to have anything to do with a cat sadist? Why don't you share it with your friends?
As for Lin Jun playing SM was killed by mistake, or even ice love, taking the initiative to ask the other party to kill himself, it is more like a lie made up by Luca. If Lin Jun really had this intention, why would he be stunned by the tranquilizer?
Trial and conviction
The judge and 12 jurors (selected from 1600 people) took ten weeks to listen to the above testimony. Prosecutors indicted Luca on these 5 counts:
1. First-degree murder;
2. Criminal harassment of the Prime Minister of the State with another member of Parliament;
3. Mailing obscene and obscene items;
4. Desecration of corpses;
5. Dissemination of obscene information.
The main defence was that Luca was not criminally responsible for suffering from schizophrenia. In other words, Luca killed Lin Jun, which is not controversial, but whether he needs to be criminally responsible or not, the key is whether the defense can prove that Luca did not know what he was doing when he committed the crime, nor did he know that his behavior was wrong.
Some may recall Eddie Gein's trial of a similar nature, in which three expert witnesses for mental illness testified. This time, 6 were present, 3 of whom were defence witnesses, 2 were prosecution witnesses and one was neutral.
These 6 experts have evaluated Luca to varying degrees, and the longest, most in-depth and most informative of these 6 experts is Dr. Joel Watts. He spent 38.5 hours interviewing Luca, his family, past doctors and others in 2013 to assemble a 124-page assessment report.
His diagnostic testimony was also the most detailed, including paranoid schizophrenia, histrionic personality disorder, borderline personality traits, and sexual perversion. The other 2 defense witnesses also gave "paranoid schizophrenia".
Neutral witnesses believe that Luca suffers from borderline personality disorder with performative characteristics.
Finally, 2 prosecution witnesses also believed that Luca had a variety of personality disorders, including borderline, anti-social, histrionic, and narcissistic, but did not believe that he had schizophrenia.
In other words, 2 prosecution and 1 neutral witness believed Luca had a personality disorder, while 3 defence witnesses believed Luca had paranoid schizophrenia.
What is the difference between having a personality disorder and having paranoid schizophrenia?
Personality disorder is a concept in mental illness, but it is not equivalent to mental illness.
Personality disorders, including Baidu Encyclopedia, are generally interpreted as "clear deviations from normal and deep-rooted patterns of behavior with maladaptive properties." The patient's abnormal personality causes suffering for oneself and others, or adversely affects individuals and society. ”
For example, patients with "histrionic personality disorder" often can't stand being ignored and always communicate with people with exaggerated behaviors, words, and emotions, as if they were performing, in order to get attention.
According to media reports, after Luca fled to Europe, he did not know how to restrain and was still uploading videos the day before his arrest. In the camera, he takes a puff of his cigarette and says with a self-absorbed look: "Hi all my fans..."
Luca's behavior of posting a video under any circumstances, even at the expense of exposing his whereabouts, is obviously abnormal.
Although personality disorders are not synonymous with mental illness, they are closely related to the development of mental illness. When the symptoms of personality disorders are severe, they can lead to the development of mental disorders.
According to Dr. Si Tianmei of Peking University Sixth Hospital, schizophrenia is a "chronic, severe mental disorder that includes abnormalities in an individual's perception, emotions, and behavior." Patients have difficulty distinguishing between the real and the imaginary, are unresponsive, withdrawn, or allergic, and in severe cases have difficulty socializing normally. ”
Paranoid schizophrenia paranoid is a type of schizophrenia. Dr. Ma Fenghong of the First People's Hospital of Yinchuan Defines it as "sensitive and suspicious at the beginning of the disease, which gradually develops into delusion, and the content of the delusion is increasingly detached from reality." Sometimes it may be accompanied by significant sensory impairment. Emotions and behaviors are often dominated by hallucinations and delusions. ”
Simply put, a paranoid schizophrenic patient may think that he has seen phenomena that others have not seen and heard voices that others have not heard, so he will react accordingly and act in a way that others cannot understand and feel inexplicable. In this situation, the patient does not know that he is different from the "objective reality" of others.
That's what the defense witnesses said. It was a fact that Luca was ill, but instead of taking his medication as directed, he went to the doctor intermittently, causing his condition to become more severe, so that he did not know what he was doing and that he was wrong when he committed the crime, so he was not criminally responsible for the killing.
However, prosecutors and neutral witnesses argue that Luca is well aware of his words and deeds and that his deviation from normal words and actions is only caused by personality disorders. Some media reports have changed the expression, saying that Luca is "just a narcissistic pervert with antisocial tendencies and abnormal personality."
On December 23, 2014, after eight days of deliberation, the jury ruled on all five counts. Luca was sentenced to life in prison and not on parole for 25 years.
Faced with Canada's heaviest sentence, Luca appealed and asked for a retrial, but voluntarily withdrew in February 2015 and expressed an expression of wanting to write a letter to apologize to the victim's family (which did not happen).
Mr. Lin's father participated in the 12-week trial, while his mother and sister remained in China because they could not take the blow. During the trial, three interpreters assisted father Lin, and the court also prepared a small conference room for them next to the courtroom where the trial was held.
According to reports, Daniel Urbas, a lawyer at BLG Law Firm, who travels frequently to China, is sympathetic to the Lin family's plight. Under his arrangement, the firm arranged accommodation for Father Lin, providing translators and lawyers. In addition to accompanying him to the small conference room, she also accompanied him to dinner and bought tickets to take him to a hockey game.
narcissism? performance?
Media reports often say that Luca is very narcissistic when it comes to him. But only one of the 6 experts thought he had narcissistic personality disorder. I'll explain it here.
A person with narcissistic personality disorder thinks he is special, and the idea is deeply rooted in his cognition and is unbreakable.
But Luca's motive for his crime came from a sick need: he needed to be taken care of, even if he had to anger the crowd. This means that he is not so sure of the idea that "I am special and everyone loves me", so he needs to challenge the moral limits of society, cause an uproar, and even break the law to emphasize and consolidate this matter.
When Luca auditioned for the reality show Cover Guy in 2007, he declared that many people told him "I am really devastatingly good-looking." There is a video that translates this sentence as "I'm handsome and scummy", which impressed me. In the end, Luca did not pass the audition.
("A lot of people tell me I'm handsome and scummy")
He did his best to get attention, signing up for at least 70 Facebook accounts under different pseudonyms and 20 different websites. He uploaded countless selfies and pretended to be fans to like himself.
He also rubbed celebrity heat, saying that he was dating Madonna and was the son of Marilyn Monroe. Best known, he claimed to have an ambiguous relationship with Karla Homolka, a serial killer whom the media called "Canada's most hated woman," and then cautiously contacted the media to clarify to reporters that the rumors had completely destroyed his reputation and peaceful life.
(Karla Homolka)
As a result, he looks more like a histrionic personality disorder than a narcissistic one.
It is said that Luca tried to create a wiki page in his own name, but never passed. To this day, the wiki page on the case still bears the name of the victim: "Murder of Lin Jun".
A man named Manny
Based on his medical history, Luca did suffer from paranoid schizophrenia, but the extent to which the condition affected his perception and behavior is inconsistent. Law enforcement agencies rely on medical diagnoses to make decisions, but experts are also at odds, giving a 3:3 assessment diagnosis.
Dr. Watts, who has been evaluating Luca for the longest time, believes that Luka is a typical paranoid schizophrenia patient because he has long had auditory hallucinations and hallucinations, which are directly related to his crime. Asked in an interview with media reporters if he was worried about being deceived, Dr. Watts replied "of course". So, what is the basis for his diagnosis?
Dr. Watts' report records a long history of psychiatric treatment in Lucca over the past 12 years at various medical institutions. These medical records show that Luca first made his appointment at the age of 17, last at the age of 29, a month before the crime.
On April 17, 2012, Luca went to the psychiatric department of the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal and told doctors that he could not sleep, felt impetuous, and was easily irritated. The case also documented Symptoms such as Luca's auditory hallucinations and fear of being followed.
In 2011, he passed out on Miami Beach and was taken to the hospital by police for 48 hours in a psychiatric ward. The doctor who treated him described him as "well-organized, particularly organized, and emotionally normal," but could not explain how he got from New York to Miami and how long he stayed.
In January 2012, another medical record stated that Luca was afraid that a man who had abused him in the past would come back to him. Doctors described him as "anxious, confused, disorganized, and delusional," believing he was in a serious condition.
Who is this man? Luca called him Manuel Lopez (Manny), and this testimony was crucial to the verdict.
Luke claims to have met Manny in 2010 while working sex in New York. According to Luca's account, from a series of videos of cat abuse to the killing of Lin Jun, it was carried out under manny's half-threat and half-encouragement. Luca's description of Manny is very realistic and at the same time frightening.
Luca said that night Manny was in a black SUV outside his apartment building and kept calling him, saying that Mr. Lin was a government intelligence officer, asking him to kill mr. Lin and videotaping the process. Luca said he was just doing what he was told. When he walked out of the building at 2:06 a.m., he was actually trying to give The tape he had recorded to Manny. It was also Manny who uploaded the video online.
Also known about Manny are Luca's mother and lawyer Salta (not her real name). Luca's mother told the police that since 2010, Luca has been telling her about Manny one after another.
In early 2011, Luca contacted Salta, a lawyer practicing in New York, to tell him that Manny had taken control of himself. Salta described Luca as shy, timid and vulnerable. After they met, Luca sent him an email outlining Manny's abuse and hurt.
A week later, Salta received a call from the Miami Police Department saying that Luca, who was in the hospital, was suspected of being drugged, kidnapped, raped, taken to Miami, and left on the beach.
In the documentary, After the crime, Salta recalls what Luca looked like when he first came to him, and he can't believe that Luca, who looks thin and timid, can commit the crime alone.
Salta added: "It's hard to believe that Luca started making a defense (Manny) that could come in handy a year and a half before the crime. It was truly an elaborate ploy, morbid but utterly clever. The implication is that he believes that Manny does not exist at all, and that Luca made it up in order to exonerate him.
Real, fantasy, or fabrication?
It's not just Sarta, the lawyer who started contacting Luca 1-2 years before the case, that manny doesn't exist. Diana and Ryan, who have been tracking Luca for 18 months, and many netizens, affirm that Luca not only has cognitive abilities in abusing cats and killing people, but also has been premeditated.
As I mentioned earlier, Deanna is a data analyst, and she often stays at home on the Internet, and she has a good set of tracking and interpreting information. Luca used a lot of pseudonyms to post and upload photos, and the pseudonyms he used, Diana said, all had origins and meanings, rather than just looking for "Michael" or "John" or something.
Luca's mother had told police that Luca was obsessed with movies and that his favorite film was "Basic Instinct", released in 1992. The heroine of the film is called Kathrine Tramell, and one of the men with whom she has sex is named Manuel (Manny Manny) Vasquez.
(Movie poster "Instinct")
Do you remember luca's pseudonym when he booked a hotel in Paris? Kirk Tramell, which is the name of the instinctive heroine Kathrine Tramell, is turned into a male version. And the heroine's male companion Manny in the movie has also become Luca's fictional male companion name.
In the erotic thriller "Instinct", there is a scene where the heroine stabs her boyfriend under her with an ice pick 31 times when she makes love to her ex-boyfriend. Luca's video scene of the madman and the ice pick mimics the scene in the movie: the victim's hands are tied, and the stained glass window at the head of the bed in the movie is replaced by a Poster of casablanca movies.
As I mentioned earlier, luca's email to The Sun in London contained a sentence that was almost entirely copied from the film's dialogue, which read: "Killing isn't like smoking. You can't quit." (Killing is not the same as smoking.) You can't quit. The message read: "Killing is not the same as smoking... Smoking can actually be quit. ”
After being extradited back to China, in the interrogation room, Luca asked to smoke a cigarette and cocked her foot when the cigarette was lit and inhaled for the first time. The heroine in the movie also made exactly the same demands and actions.
(Footage from the movie)
Even the music in the videos is mimicking these film productions. The background music in Mad men and the ice pick is the soundtrack from the movie "American Psycho".
As luca claimed in the email to The Sun, he was making a movie. In this movie, Luca is the protagonist. Manny, on the other hand, is both a character in Instinct and a character in the films he makes.
Back to the case: After investigation, the police could not find any evidence of "Manny's" existence. For example, on the night of the crime, Luca's mobile phone did not have any record of incoming calls.
Follow-up and conclusion
In July 2013, police charged Mark Marek, the Bestgore.com's web owner, for corrupting public morality and letting the 11-minute video upload and circulate. This is an extremely rare crime. The defendant pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 6 months of conditional imprisonment. The site is currently deactivated.
In 2015, Luca placed an ad on The Canadian Inmates Connect Inc. and met another male cellmate, Anthony Jolin, who had been sentenced to life. They married in 2017, and the wedding took place at the Port Katyre prison where they were being held. But they can't meet or be alone.

Lin Jun's friend once made a bad noise to reporters. He said the whole world was paying attention to the killer and remembering what he looked like, but not Lin Jun and the harm suffered by his family.
After the incident, li bo, the acting leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, called on the public to mourn the victims, not pay attention to the notoriety of the killers.

When I read the case information, especially the documentary that lasted for nearly three hours, I also felt the strong emotions of netizens towards the murderer. Although there are only a few main interviewees, the documentary exposes tens of thousands of netizens' anger, contempt, and disgust towards Luca.
What I want to say is that compared with the shameless name of the murderer, more people lament and worry about Lin Jun's premature death. Although he lost his life due to a misjudgment, the sincerity behind that trust can never be taken away. Lin Jun has left a warm smile, a love for animals and life, and the courage to pursue dreams. I wish to commemorate him with this article.
