Beijing | Qingying Studio's 2019 graduation work exhibition No.3: Boundary Drift

In the rapid development of China and the world, everything around us is changing rapidly. Seeing his tall buildings rise and seeing his buildings fall, director Cong Feng called it the modern plate drift movement in "Strata 1" - people drift with the plates, and people also push the boundary.

On the evening of July 5th, the third screening of this year's Qingying Studio Graduation Exhibition, our graduates presented the time and space in their eyes that constantly collided with each other in six films, and glimpsed humanity in the gaps of boundaries. From the market to the non-existent, from the airport from scratch, when manpower can make the sea into a mulberry field, how to live in it? The Malay Archipelago is a product of plate movements, and people from there will bring two stories of Chinese families under the collision and separation. The last two films focus on the mental journey and survival of individuals wandering around the border.

Film introduction

Tianning Market/Zhang Xiaoyan/63min

Beijing | Qingying Studio's 2019 graduation work exhibition No.3: Boundary Drift

Tianning Market is located in Yuanling County, Huaihua City, Hunan Province, and was put into use in 1993. It is the iconic location of Yuanling County, the largest local bazaar, and a time space that is dying of old age. Through the tracking of returning young people to Bingjie, the film strives to restore the process of a county woman from a left-behind child to a divorced mother; in parallel, it shoots other tenants, market management offices, cleaning and transportation, trying to observe the normal life of people in county-level cities through this public space.

The film is based on the director's hometown.

The first motivation for shooting is out of curiosity: from the director's memory to the present, the appearance of the Tianning market has never changed. In today's urbanization, why can such a spatial pattern be so stable?

The second motivation for the shooting is emotional: I grew up with this market, our social relations were once intertwined with this space, and now we have moved to a different situation, but this market seems to have stayed where it is. I observe people living in it, like I can see a page of my life in the past. I would love to revisit the time this space refers to and leave it as it was for the inhabitants of the town.

Dad is not at home / Cheng Zhonghui / 29min

Beijing | Qingying Studio's 2019 graduation work exhibition No.3: Boundary Drift

Across the river of time, in the same forest, you have never met each other. If your hometown doesn't have your name, who are you? Opening an old 1992 video, I met unfamiliar relatives and grandfathers I had never met, and I also opened a dusty time capsule. During the Spring Festival, I returned to my father's hometown, Temaru Chinese New Village, Malaysia. I didn't grow up here, but the Chinese in Malaysia have taken root here. By recording the oral history stories of the life and family of the current Malaysian Chinese new village, the film reveals the changes of a family under the background of the big era. Find the shadow of history under the appearance of life and restore a period of the past.

Beijing | Qingying Studio's 2019 graduation work exhibition No.3: Boundary Drift

Dad was the eldest son, but people in the new village always thought that the second uncle was Grandma's eldest son. The third uncle did not have much impression of his father, and my aunt always had a complaining tone when she talked about my father, while my grandmother did not say anything. Through the lens I asked my father, he said that the old ancestral house in the family was built by him and his grandfather; he said that people always need to face choices and choose things of higher value. The truth is that the Chinese Village has come out of the millions of Chinese in Malaysia, and my dad is one of them. He was not at home, and he also missed the death of his grandfather.

The stories I hear when I get home are like fragments of a mirror, piecing together a life and an era that I didn't imagine.

Director: Cheng Zhonghui, a 2019 undergraduate graduate of the School of Journalism and Communication of Tsinghua University.
