Foreign media reporter visits Beijing Winter Olympic Venues: "Water Cube" becomes "Ice Cube"

According to Agence France-Presse Beijing reported on October 25, with about 100 days left before the opening of the Beijing Winter Olympics, a reporter from the Sports Department of Agence France-Presse visited the venues of the Winter Olympics.

The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics will be held in three different divisions, and the new venues will be used with venues for the 2008 Olympic Games, such as the Bird's Nest Stadium.

Beijing Division

The Report said that the Opening and Closing Ceremonies will be held at the Bird's Nest, a national stadium that can accommodate 80,000 people. The "Water Cube" aquatic center has been transformed into the "Ice Cube" that holds curling competitions.

Other venues for the 2008 Olympics were also renovated. In 2008, the Wukesong Sports Center and the National Stadium, which held basketball and gymnastics events, will be remodeled to hold ice hockey competitions.

According to the report, the only new addition to Beijing's existing Olympic Park is a speed skating hall that can accommodate 12,000 people, known as the "ice ribbon".

New venues have also been built in other parts of Beijing, such as the most eye-catching venues for some skiing and snowboarding events.

Agence France-Presse reporters noted that a 60-meter-high "big jump" sits next to four huge cooling towers of a former steel mill that once employed tens of thousands of workers and is now a trendy bar and restaurant and office space.

Yanqing Division

The Beijing Winter Olympics have promoted government-backed winter sports, with the goal of building a trillion-yuan industry by 2025.

The Yanqing Racing District, about 75 kilometers northwest of downtown Beijing, has reportedly already had a number of ski resorts and luxury hotels. The National Bobsleigh Centre there has China's first bobsleigh, steel-framed bobsleigh and luge track. The center has seats for 2,000 people and can accommodate 8,000 standing spectators.

The report also said that there is also a new alpine ski center with a capacity of 8,500 people nearby, with a vertical height difference of up to 900 meters.

Zhangjiakou Division

China has connected Zhangjiakou, about 180 kilometers northwest of Beijing, with two other Olympic zones by high-speed rail, which state media say is the first high-speed rail line to allow self-driving trains to reach speeds of 350 kilometers per hour.

The reporter found that this popular ski resort also added an unconventional ski jumping venue, and its design imitates the traditional "Ruyi" shape that symbolizes good luck.

Organizers are understood to have used an existing ski resort to hold freestyle skiing and snowboarding competitions. It is just a few kilometres from Zhangjiakou's Winter Olympic Village, a swiss ski chalet-style apartment cluster surrounded by mountains.

Three new Winter Olympic villages — one in each division — reportedly house more than 6,000 athletes and officials. After the Winter Olympics, they will be converted into public housing or commercial parks.
