Guan Guangzhi

Guan Guangzhi was born in Jilin City in 1896. Graduated from Shenyang American College, he went to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 1931 to study, and has visited France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Russia and other countries. After returning to China, he successively taught at Yenching University, Peking National Art College, Fu Jen University, Tsinghua University, Central Academy of Fine Arts and other institutions of higher learning.

Guan Guangzhi is China's earliest and most influential watercolor painter, during his study in the United Kingdom, specialized in watercolor painting, gouache painting, and has visited France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Russia and other countries, deeply rooted in the essence of Western painting. His watercolor painting method is unique, using blank fill transparent painting method, once completed, with thin and transparent color, but the feeling is thick, washed with color, dot dyeing and seepage, clean and neat, no double brush, no dirty color, bright color, brushwork, self-contained. In his works, it is not clear which Western tradition to learn from, but Tyner's light and color show off, Constanbul's water color and the majestic and elegant wind of The French Virgil are all integrated into his works.

In his lifetime, Guan Guangzhi created a large number of watercolor paintings and gouache paintings, many of which were circulated abroad, especially the watercolor paintings depicting famous architectural landscapes of various generations of Chinese people, which enjoyed a high reputation in the world. After liberation, he praised socialist construction with great enthusiasm and watercolor paintings, and in the first national watercolor and sketch exhibition in 1954, his representative work of the 1950s, "Sanlihe Mosque", was known as one of the finest works in the exhibition with its skillful technique and magnificent colors.

Guan Guangzhi died in 1958 at the age of 62, but his contribution to Chinese watercolor art was considerable, so the title of "Nan Li (Jian Chen) Bei Guan (Guangzhi)" shows the lofty position of this old gentleman in people's minds.

Lei Yu (1921.11-1989) is a native of Zhongshan, Guangdong. He specializes in watercolor painting. In his early years, he studied art with Li Tiefu and co-founded an art school in Hong Kong. Later, it was moved to Shanghai and converted into a studio, recruiting students to teach watercolor painting. In 1952, he was appointed as the art designer of Shanghai Fine Arts Studio, and the representative animation films were "A Painting of The Brocade" and "The King of the Forest". In his spare time, he creates a large number of landscapes and portraits. He has published "Research on Watercolor Painting Techniques" and "Lei Rainwater Painting Series". He is a member of the China Artists Association and the first vice president of the Shanghai Watercolor Research Association.

Lee Wing Sen

Li Yongsen (1898~1998), a native of Changshu, Jiangsu Province. In the 13th year of the Republic of China (1924), he graduated from Suzhou Academy of Fine Arts. He then spent his life working in Shanghai. From the 1920s to the 1950s, he successively served as the editor of Pacific Pictorial, the art design of China Chemical Industry Society, the professor of the Pattern Department of Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, and the vice president of Suzhou Art College. After 1953, he served as the head of the art design team of the Daily Chemical Company of the Shanghai Light Industry Bureau, a professor of the Shanghai Light Industry College, a professor of Tongji University and the newly founded Shanghai Meizhuan. He is a member of the China Artists Association, a director of the Shanghai Branch of the China Artists Association, and a librarian of the Shanghai Research Museum of Culture and History. He participated in the establishment of the Shanghai Watercolor Research Association and the Shanghai Pastel Painting Society, and served as honorary presidents respectively. Proficient in watercolor painting, the style is realistic and freehand. He is also a long time of industrial and commercial art design and pastel painting. In 1988, he and his wife Shao Liangyun held a double exhibition at the Shanghai Art Museum, and won the Award of the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Culture for donating some of the works on display to the art museum.

Pan Sitong

Pan Sitong (1903.10--1980.3), a native of Xinhui City, Guangdong Province, was one of the early famous watercolor painters in China.

In 1922, he was admitted to the Western Painting Department of the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, and graduated in 1925. In 1923, together with Chen Qiucao and Fang Xueqiu, he founded the "White Goose Painting Society" in Shanghai and published the "White Goose Painting Journal". Attached to it is the "White Goose Painting Research Institute", which was renamed "White Goose Painting School" in 1934. He was the director of the Shanghai "White Goose Painting Society" Research Institute, training more than 1,000 students before and after, which was very influential; he often designed book binding designs for publishing companies, and painted advertisements and monthly cards for manufacturers. From 1929 to 1931, he was a professor of drawing and watercolor painting in the Department of Western Painting of the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts. In 1933, he was the art editor of the Shanghai Commercial Press and the editor of the fine arts department of Dacheng Publishing Company. Since 1955, he has been teaching at the East China Branch of the Central Academy of Fine Arts (later Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts). At the same time, he is immersed in the creation of watercolor paintings and is good at depicting landscapes. He also served as the director of the Shanghai New Chinese Art Research Institute, the cover design of the art group of the Beijing Commercial Press, and the editor of the Beijing Higher Education Press.

Xu Yongqing

Xu Yongqing (1880~1953) modern painter. Shanghainese. He lost his parents at an early age and was adopted by the Shanghai Xujiahui Catholic Church Orphanage, which was attached to the painting room and learned drawing, watercolor and oil painting from Liu Bizhen and foreign painting teachers.

At the age of sixteen, he entered the TushanWan Printing House, which also belongs to xujiahui Catholic Church, to engage in illustration creation and binding design. He specializes in watercolor painting and oil painting. In 1913, he presided over the drawing department of the Shanghai Commercial Press, and the trainees included Hang Xiaoying, He Yimei, Jin Meisheng, Jin Xuechen, Ge Xianglan, etc., all of whom learned drawing, watercolor painting and oil painting from him. At the same time, he was employed by shanghai academy of fine arts to teach Western painting. A large number of pencil sketches and watercolor drawings are painted in the middle, which are published by the Shanghai Commercial Press and Youzheng Bookstore as a copy of the drawings of primary and secondary school students. He is good at painting landscapes and is not good at painting characters, so he often cooperates with Zheng Mantuo in monthly card painting to make up for the scenery. After the Japanese invaded Shanghai, they went to Hong Kong with their families and continued to teach Western painting. After the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japan, he once returned to Shanghai and later moved to Qingdao. He has published "Watercolor Painting Sketching Method" and so on.

Zhang Meisun

Zhang Meisun (1894~1973) modern watercolor painter. His young name was Fu Zhong, and he later changed his name to Meisun (梅孙) and was called Duke Of Elk. Haining, Zhejiang.

The watercolor paintings he has made like to use dry painting methods, and draw on the traditional landscape painting artistic treatment methods in China, and the brushwork has national characteristics.

After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he served as an editor of Xuelin Bookstore, New Art Publishing House, and Shanghai People's Fine Arts Publishing House.
