Appreciation of the works of Zhang Meisun, a pioneer of Chinese watercolor painting (100 paintings)

Zhang Meisun (1894~1973) modern watercolor painter.

His young name was Fu Zhong, and he later changed his name to Meisun (梅孙) and was called Duke Of Elk. Haining, Zhejiang.

He is a member of the China Artists Association, a director of the Shanghai Branch of the Artists Association, and a librarian of the Shanghai Municipal Museum of Culture and History.

Zhang Meisun lost his father at an early age, went to Shanghai as an apprentice at the age of fifteen, and learned to paint from Zhou Xiang for nine years in his spare time. Later, he worked for British American Tobacco and learned the art of lithography.

In 1917, he assisted Zhou Xiang in opening the Chinese Art College, and succeeded the Dahua Art Company and the Shanghai Fine Arts and Painting Society. In 1924, he co-founded the Dahua Art Company with his friends, and at the same time organized the Shanghai Fine Arts and Painting Society.

Later, he joined the White Goose Painting Club and taught at Kunfan, Qingxin and other girls' middle schools.

In 1928, he was appointed as an art inspector of the Shanghai Municipal Education Bureau. After the fall of Shanghai in 1937, he moved to the concession to teach and sell paintings for a living. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War in 1945, he entered the Shanghai Municipal Art Museum.

From the 1920s to the 1940s, he taught at the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts and the girls' high schools of Qingxin, Kunfan, Mingde and Huaiwen, and also presided over the editing of pictures in Shanghai Declaration, Children's Morning News, and Xinya Bookstore.

Since 1949, he has served as the editor of Xuelin Bookstore, New Art Publishing House, and Shanghai People's Fine Arts Publishing House.

From the 1950s to the 1960s, he traveled inside and outside the Great Wall and traveled north and south of the great river to sketch. In his later years, he was hired as a librarian at the Shanghai Museum of Culture and History.

He was a member of the early comic book club.

His painting style tends to be natural, adheres to landscape sketching, advocates the creation of teachers, and the painting style is simple. The watercolor paintings he has made like to use dry painting methods, and draw on the traditional landscape painting artistic treatment methods in China, and the brushwork has national characteristics.

After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he served as an editor of Xuelin Bookstore, New Art Publishing House, and Shanghai People's Fine Arts Publishing House.

He retired in 1960 due to illness.
