William Holman Hunt (1827–1910), English painter and one of the founders of pre-Raphaelite school. In 1845, he entered the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, where he met Miles and Rossetti. So they collaborated to create the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, determined to revive the British painting scene. When the artists of the Raphael school wanted to express some subject matter related to reality, they found the theme of "fallen woman", and Hunter was among them. He used to wander the neighborhoods where prostitutes lived, hoping to find inspiration. The heroine in this work is not based on a prostitute, but a rich woman who goes around looking for pleasure, hunter loves her enough to marry her, and wants to "improve" her "morality". But her morality proved to be unmistakable. The work depicts a housekeeper-like woman who suddenly rises from the lap of her lover (most likely the man), as if her sense of self is stimulated and decides to detach herself from some undesirable situation. Although it is full of symbols of moral symbolism, it is still an outstanding oil painting that "reflects the dark side of Victorian family life".
His Awakening of conscience (1852-1854) shows the characteristics of pre-Raphaelites. He meticulously depicts every detail with neat brushwork and uses them to hint at the moral admonitions of his work. Despite the realism of the details, the painting does not have the same realism as the works of Courbet and Dumière, an artificial garden with flowers in which the flowers are fake flowers without fragrance.
Hunter's Pre-Raphaelites and the Pre-Raphaelite Association is a major work on pre-Raphaelite views in autobiographical form. As an important painter of the "Pre-Raphaelites", Hunter always had a religious moral teaching throughout his work. Discovery of Conscience is one such painting in which a music teacher and his schoolgirls, under the theme of "Discovery of Conscience," are one showing kindness and the other expressing surprise. The painter portrayed two figures in a freehand style, which was extremely realistic and vivid. He advocates facing nature and life, and this work shows a painter's attitude towards life.
