The Chinese Air Force of the Centennial Red Map

The 12 fighters lined up in a formation of geese soared between the sea and the air, dragging out a long white smoke and outlining the heroic posture of the Chinese Air Force formation in the deep blue sky.

This is the formation of the People's Air Force during flight training on the occasion of the military parade marking the 60th anniversary of the founding of New China. The photographer who took this photo was Shen Ling, China's first female photographer to take aerial photographs of a third-generation fighter jet.

Shen Ling is a full-time photography officer and professional and technical colonel of the Political Department of the Former Air Force of the Guangzhou Military Region. A "Air Force Blue", she wears it for 45 years, a photography bag, and a back for decades. She used the camera to record the solid pace of the development and take-off of the Chinese Air Force, and also left a brave silhouette of the air force soldiers who insisted on dedication and sacrifice without fear.

On the occasion of the centenary of the founding of the party, the reporter of Nanfang Daily looked for a hundred years of red maps and listened to Shen Ling tell the story behind the photos.

Shen Ling's "Blue Sky Imagination" taken by Shen Ling on a new third-generation fighter plane is a unique image of the flight of the air force fighter formation in the 60th anniversary of the founding of New China.

Flying a fighter jet to shoot the war eagle majestically, the risk factor is high, and the physical requirements are strict. Shen Ling submitted countless application reports, but was rejected. Finally, that dream came true when she was 54 years old.

After more than a month of training, on May 13, 2009, Shen Ling boarded a Su-27 fighter to perform aerial parade air echelon training tasks.

That day, high in the air, Shen Ling's flying helmet headset suddenly sent instructions for her to prepare. As soon as the words fell, 12 fighter planes were staggered in a row, just as Shen Ling had hoped, lined up in the shape of a geese. Just a few seconds! Shen Ling pressed the shutter.

After the Wenchuan earthquake, Shen Ling followed the People's Air Force to participate in the rescue in the hard-hit areas, recording the moving story of the people's children and soldiers struggling to rescue on the front line of life and death.

On the second day of the Wenchuan earthquake, Shen Ling followed the airborne rescue troops into the hardest hit area. There, she snapped a picture of a weeping elder sister handing several large bags of steamed buns to the People's Liberation Army. It turned out that three of her relatives were killed in the earthquake, and it was the People's Liberation Army that rescued her parents. These 600 steamed buns embody the most simple and sincere feelings of the people in the earthquake area for the People's Liberation Army.

Shen Ling focused the camera more on ordinary soldiers. She interviewed and photographed Chinese female pilots many times, recording their shining youth with the camera.

Most of the images of Yu Xu, China's first J-10 female pilot, are from Shen Ling's footage, including the heroic appearance when she returns from flying with her teammates, and also the green and cute side of daily private. Since the 2009 National Day military parade, in the past 7 years, Shen Ling has repeatedly followed and recorded Yu Xu's growth footprints with the camera, forming a deep feeling.

"Flying is a very dangerous career, but Yu Xu is a child who has no complaints and no regrets." To this day, Shen Ling's heart is still unforgettable, and she can't help but cry when she mentions Yu Xu.

"There are many pilots like Yu Xu who bravely sacrificed their lives for the country." Looking back on history, Shen Ling said with emotion that the Chinese Air Force grew up in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, tempered its rescue combat effectiveness during the Wenchuan earthquake, and received the world's attention salute during the National Day military parade.
