Re-reading Shu Ting's "Brig Ship": The fog wet my wings, but the wind did not allow me to hesitate any longer

Shu Ting is Hai's daughter.

In her first collection of poems, "The Brig", there are more than a dozen works such as "To the Sea", "Morning Song on the Seashore", "Pearl Shell - Tears of the Sea", which directly praise the sea that gave birth to her, or the gratitude of a daughter who grew up on the seashore to her mother, or the inspiration of the wave wooden boat beach to her. The daughter of the sea sings and poems for the sea, just as the red coral grows on the bottom of the sea and the coast is covered with mangroves.

However, the poet Shu Ting's rise from gulangyu Island was a major event in the Chinese literary scene in the 1980s! "The Red House,/ The old banyan tree, the fishing lamp on the bay /In my eyes it became a word / The words produced a sound / The waves sprang around". The rise of several young poets represented by Shu Ting has shaken the literary world and affected society, becoming a remarkable phenomenon in literature in the new era. Professor Xie Mian enthusiastically praised her and their poems in "Their Lyric Poems":

The appearance of Shu Ting has attracted the attention of contemporary people. With the delicacy characteristic of young women, she writes the longing and sorrow of the inner world full of contradictions, and the hazy joy of the girl's first love is mixed with the horror of nightmares, resulting in her own beautiful sad style. Her poems may inevitably be delicate and euphemistic, but if we talk about the mental pain brought about by unprecedented social unrest and the disorders of political life, a complex psychology of surprises that have been repressed for a long time and regained vitality, especially the subtle emotions of young women, there is no doubt that artistic cohesion has been obtained in her poems. ”

Poetry critics from Peking University, such as Xie Mian and Sun Shaozhen, cheered for the rise of the "obscure" poet group, inspiring these newcomers who had just entered the literary ranks, and also caring for the works of new people who had just sprouted new shoots. At that time, the poetry of this group was called "obscure school". At first, the title had several explanations: it didn't make sense. Chinese poetry, which has always had a rational voice of "poetry without praise", cannot be understood, and should not be the reason why poets should be blamed. However, in the eighties, which had just passed the left wind, it was not understood, that is, the tendency and direction of creation, and the great right and wrong of why literature served people. Fortunately, with the careful care of poetry critics and the tolerance of the eighties, Shu Ting is still singing bravely: "They are in heaven / May they be a star / They are on earth / May they be a lamp / Not afraid of how small / As long as they are as far as possible / Only because they are not recognized / they are extra brave and sincere." Shu Ting used poetry to answer the questions of the times, and also used poetry to put forward the demands of a generation of young people.

In "The Brig", there are not many poems that really belong to love. Any reference to a woman's characteristic desire for love, a hazy description of the ideal partner, is rare in the collection of poems. "To the Oak Tree" is said to have been recited by some young people at weddings. This classic work, I think, is still the core of women's sense of self-reliance, but it is sung in a delicate and feminine soprano. "To the Oak Tree" should not be attributed to pure love poems, she is the East China Sea minor key that conveys the spirit of the May Fourth New Culture Movement.

Shu Ting's poems, as a whole, convey in the work, are positive and upward forces. She was a female poet, but she was also the daughter of the sea. Because of the blue sea and the coastline connecting the skyline, the waves and waves gave birth to her broad mind, and the tide rose and fell, the stranded wooden boats on the beach, and the departure and arrival on the dock all stimulated her sea thoughts. "Oh, life, / Although you have broken / Countless pure dreams, / There are also some brave people, / like the swift petrel in the storm." It must be said that this poem, written in 1973, was inspired by Gorky's Petrel. The petrel fights in the wind and waves, showing the youth the strength of life and the courage to live. In "Brig", there are two works involving major themes, which are "After the Storm - Commemorating the Seventy-two Comrades Who Died on the Bohai No. 2 Drilling Ship", in that world-renowned shipwreck, the reporter asked the report, the poet was not absent, Shu Ting, a weak female poet, expressed her call and contemplation of life, and looked back at people, the starting point of Marxism. I suspect that the early poet Shu Ting was influenced by Russian literature. Her "Motherland Oh, My Dear Motherland", with images such as "dilapidated old water wheels" and "roadbeds in disrepair", praises the motherland, which has a similar treatment with Lermontov's "Motherland". In the eyes of the poet, the motherland is not an empty slogan or an extreme irrational act, but a concrete "forest", "a path between villages", and "a shimmering birch". Shu Ting, like Lermontov, "I love the motherland, but I use strange love." It is difficult to love one person, it is easy to love all mankind; it is difficult to love the poor motherland, and it is easy to love the motherland that can bring wealth to oneself. Love is concrete, and verses are concrete, concrete. In the 1980s, these poems that expressed large themes lacked the proper understanding of poets in society.

In the eighties, literature, poets' poems, inspired a generation of young people. I was a young man of that era, who had ordered "Brig Boat" from Shanghai, and my heart jumped with the poets and grew up in poetry. Friends of that era, who had not read Shu Ting and their poems!

"The fog wet my wings / But the wind does not allow me to hesitate any longer." Shu Ting's poems speak for a generation of young people and sing the songs of the hearts of a generation of young people. No matter how many tribulations they suffered in their youth, the tribulations can only make people stronger; the sea breeze of the times still has to push them to ride the wind and waves and sail to the other shore.

More than ten years ago, I went to Gulangyu Island, on this small island with an area of only 1.91 square kilometers, I saw the concert hall, the Gospel Hall, and the statues of Lin Qiaozhi and Ma John. When the tourism industry disturbed the tranquility of the island, I thought, why is there so many outstanding people on the mini island? What is the relationship between the density of space and the growth of talents? When the figure of the eighty-year-old music conductor Zheng Xiaoying flashed on the island, yes, I thought of the poet Shu Ting, who lives on this red-tiled and green tree island.

Gulangyu Island has no cars, but the tourism economy, ant-like crawling tourists, is very rude to the island.
