The Cultural Institute has planned a "Special Screening" to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea on March 1 and the establishment of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea. It integrates the story of 100 years from 1919 to 2019 to the present, where Korean culture and history coexist, and the "Centennial Road of Korean Cinema (hereinafter referred to as the event)" consists of three parts: "Best Box Office Unit (Best2 box office films in the history of Korean domestic films)", "Tragic Epic Unit (History We Must Remember, Our Heroes)", and "Music Film Unit (Feeling Korean Movies with Music)", with a total of 10 film works.

* On October 27, 1919, Kim Tao-san's Revenge of Righteousness (the first Korean film) premiered.

In May this year, director Bong Joon-ho won the first Palme d'Or in the history of Korean cinema for his film "Parasite", at the Cannes Film Festival, one of the world's three major film festivals. Not only has director Bong Joon-ho become a veritable world-class famous director, but Korean cinema and culture have also been further improved by this opportunity.

The Film Promotion Committee reported on the palme d'Or award: "This is the result of the support of people who love Korean cinema."

From the 1st to 10th places in the "box office ranking of movies in the past" in South Korea, except for "Avengers 4: Endgame" and "Avatar", the remaining 8 works are Korean local films, which alone shows the deep feelings and concerns of the people for Korean films.

In this regard, the Cultural Institute will screen "Mingliang" directed by Kim Han-min, which has been the highest in the box office since its release in July 2014, and "Extreme Occupation" by Lee Byung-hyun, which rose to second place when it was released in January 2019, through the "Best Box Office Unit (Best2 of all the films released in South Korea)".

Today, in 2019, the only answer to the existence of the Republic of Korea is that 100 years ago, in 1919, men, women and children, all worked hard to become the masters of the country and live in a free and independent country, and it was those "independence activists" who fought for this.

At the event held on the occasion of 100 years of Korean cinema, the Cultural Institute screened four works, including "Dongju" and "Park Lie" directed by Lee Joon-yeol, "Secret Agent" directed by Kim Ji-woon, and "Resistance: The Story of Yoo Kwan-soon" directed by Cho Min-ho through the "Tragic Epic Unit (History We Must Remember, Our Heroes)". Through these works, the audience is provided with a chance to meet the heroes of 100 years ago that we cannot and cannot forget.

"Music" in a movie that opens the door to memory like a scent

The music in the film has an unusual "Proust effect". If the "aroma" generally opens the door of memory bound by the busy and repetitive daily life and awakens the memory, the "music" in the movie has the mysterious power to vividly portray the scenes in the originally forgotten movie and the emotions in the memory.

*The Proust effect, named after Marcel Proust (1871 ~ 1922), author of the French novel Reminiscences of The Age of Water, refers to the phenomenon of awakening forgotten memories with "aromas and smells"

As a result, the Cultural Institute prepared the "Music Film Unit (Feeling Korean Films with Music)" and screened "Korea's First Musical Films", the late director Yoo Dong-il's "Green Hill" and "The First To Break Through 1 Million Viewers" by Lim Kwon-taek, two works with the word "most" in the history of Korean cinema.

*"Green Hill" premiered on August 15, 1948. This work is the first starring work of the late singer Hyun-in, who was born in 1919 and was active as a singer in Shanghai, China in the 1930s and 1940s, and was known as "Korea's First Singer" after returning to China in 1946 for "Silla Moon Night".

When searching for keywords such as "Korean Film OST" and "Korean Film Music Best" on well-known portals in China and South Korea, there are only two works that repeatedly appear and attract wide attention, namely "Spring Death" directed by Heo Qinhao, who has created a lot of imitations and buzzwords, and "My Savage Girlfriend" directed by Guo Zairong. The works of the above four music film units can make the audience feel "then, that moment, that moment".

Kim Bae-so, president of the Cultural Institute, said: "Shanghai, China, where our institute is located, is the holy land of the independence movement and the origin of the Korean Provisional Government, and the films "Secret Agent" and "Assassination" shot against the background of real history were all filmed in Shanghai. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the 3.1 Movement and the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea, the "Centennial Road to Korean Cinema" special screening held to commemorate the centenary of Korean cinema will focus on the medium of "film" to review the significance of history and culture, and hope that this event will become a bridge of mutual understanding, consensus and communication between countries and generations. ”

The screening of 10 Korean films with different styles and wonderful features in this special screening has built a bridge between Korean films and Chinese audiences, and played a positive role in promoting the exchange and cooperation between Chinese and Korean film cultures. As a bridge for Cultural Exchanges between China and South Korea, the Korean Cultural Institute in Shanghai will hold various public welfare literary and artistic activities in the future to enrich everyone's cultural life.
