Hulu officially booked the real crime poetry anthology The Act, created by Nick Antosca (creator of Channel Zero) and Michelle Dean, and directed the first season by Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre.
Each season of the show will focus on a special case, and the first season will be based on Michelle Dean's true-story article "Dee Dee Wanted Her Daughter To Be Sick, Gypsy Wanted Her Mom To Be Murdered," which tells the story of Dee Dee, a 48-year-old single mother Blanchard told people around him that his daughter Gypsy had a variety of serious illnesses (such as brain damage and dementia, leukemia, asthma, etc.), but no one actually knew that Gypsy was simply a very healthy adult; later Dee Dee died of multiple knives, and her neighbors, relatives and the police found out that Gypsy was abused and persuaded her boyfriend to kill her mother.
Patricia Arquette plays dee Dee, a mother who is seen as the perfect mother to outsiders; she has endured hardships to care for her "seriously ill" daughter Gypsy, and she has been homeless and experienced Hurricane Katrina, so Dee Dee is a role model in the Springfield community in Missouri. Joey King plays Gypsy, who is confined to a wheelchair and is trying to rebel against her mother.
Chloë Sevigny plays Mel, who leads a community woman who has a hard life and sympathizes with Dee Dee, but is stunned when she discovers the truth, Anna Sophia Robb plays Mel's daughter Lacey, who is as popular with the community as a mother, but her ideas are relatively idealistic. Lacey was quickly attracted to Dee And Gypsy and wanted to help them. Calum Worthy plays Nick, whom Gypsy met on The Christian Dating Network.
