Hong Kong, October 16 (Xinhua) -- The award ceremony of the first "STEM-Up Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Competition" hosted by the Junior Police Call was held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on the 16th, and more than 90 students won awards.

It is reported that the competition in line with the development trend of STEM education in Hong Kong provides a platform for primary and secondary school students to develop their ability to solve problems and logical reasoning through experiential learning, and stimulate their creative thinking, encouraging them to propose innovative and feasible solutions to practice the concept of "smart city".

The competition was divided into five groups: "Creative Design Drawing" of the Initial Group, "Creative Proposal" of the Initial Group, Senior Group, Junior High School Group and High School Group, and the first competition was enthusiastically responded to, attracting more than 1,000 students from 160 schools to sign up.

The Commissioner of Police of Hong Kong, Mr Siu Tak Yee, the Permanent Secretary for Education of the HKSAR Government, Mrs Lee Mei-chan, the Deputy Secretary for Innovation and Technology of the HKSAR Government, Dr Chung Wai-keung, the Chairman of the Hong Kong Productivity Council, Mr Lam, and the Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong New Generation Cultural Association, Mr Yeung Hon-kuen, were the guests of honour and presented 75 awards to over 90 winners.

In her speech at the ceremony, Siu said that Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor proposed a number of I&T-related measures in her 2021 Policy Address, including promoting R&D and pooling talents, and the 14th Five-Year Plan also explicitly supported Hong Kong's construction of an international innovation and technology hub, fully affirming Hong Kong's important position in the country's science and technology development. The organizers hope to use this competition to explore the potential of young people's science and technology and cultivate them to become social leaders.

Siu said that he was pleased to learn that many creative and practical entries could be applied to daily life, and some works could play a more important role in ensuring the safety of the public and facilitating police work. He said that the Police Force has also been in line with the rapid pace of social development, striving to innovate and keep pace with the times.

In line with the theme, the award ceremony added a number of I&T elements, including a robot-led guest entry and drone performance, an augmented reality/virtual reality game, and a real-time racing game using 5G technology, allowing participants to experience the fun of technology. (End)
