The character of the Headless Horseman originated with the American literary writer Washington Owen. He was a brave knight before his death on the battlefield, and his first rank was cut off by the enemy, so every dark and windy night of the moon, he would ride a horse that was also undead to haunt the Valley of broken heads, looking around for his lost head. And whenever he saw someone who looked similar to his own life, he would behead him and bring him back.
