"Gaya" is a Tibetan transliteration meaning "Gahasa"; "Dorji Ding" means "Vajrayogini".
Legend has it that there is a huge stone on the site of the temple, and the stone naturally creates a Tibetan "Ga" character, so it is called Gatuo; and because of the legend that the place was opened by the Lotus Master 3 times, the eight lotus masters practiced here, and its blessing power is the same as that of the Indian Vajrayogini, so it is called Vajrayogini. Gatuo Monastery was the first temple in Kham Tibetan area, so it is also known as the birthplace of Tibetan Buddhism in Kham Tibetan area.
