Due to coronavirus infection and travel restrictions, the Duke of Sussex was unable to return home.
Harry, 35, recently recorded a video at his home in Santa Barbara in which he revealed that it was indeed the flu pandemic that prevented him from returning to the UK.
The Duke of Sussex attended the video conference call with rugby union staff and volunteers.
On the phone, Prince Harry asked one of the participants if she would be willing to be alone when everyone else was in pairs at the event, and joked, "If I were you, I would have my family on the other side of the camera."
He went on to say: "Next year we will host a full Rugby League World Cup. I will be back for sure.
"If it wasn't for Covid, I would have come back a long time ago."
Not being able to go home for such a long time can be difficult for Harry, as he has been out of the UK for 6 months by the end of September.
In particular, there was a member of the royal family whom Harry missed very much — his cousin, Princess Eugenie.
Eugenie, 30, and Prince Harry have always been close, and when they were younger, they often went to clubs and parties together.

Regarding Prince Harry's relationship with Eugenie, the biography reads: "Prince Harry has been confiding to his cousin about the women in his life.
"Not only did he trust her without question, but friends also said she gave a lot of good advice and had been 'unwise' for years.
"So it's no surprise that Eugenie was the first person in the family to know about his relationship with Megan."
According to In Search of Freedom, Eugenie is glad that her cousin has finally found someone he wants to be with her.
The book says: "Eugenie had always wanted to see her cousin settle down and be happy, and she told her friend that she loved Megan and thought she was Harry's nourishing agent."
The relationship between the two royals dates back to childhood and adulthood, and both have enjoyed party scenes together.
Mr Scooby and Ms Durand said: "Of the Queen's grandchildren, the relationship between Princess Eugenie and Prince Harry is the most natural.
Like Harry, Eugenie was loyal, honest and funny.
"The two had spent many nights in London, sneaking into backstage entrances to clubs like Mahiki, who Jack used to be manager, or in an area of THE VIP where they drank with Mexican skull-shaped glasses and a huge frozen margarita cocktail (which had several straws in it).
