Remember! He spent his life depicting the development trajectory of modern orthopedics in China

On June 16, 2019, Feng Chuanhan, a member of the Communist Party of China, a famous orthopedic scientist, medical educator, national first-class professor, former vice president of Beijing Medical College, former president of Peking University People's Hospital, first chairman of the Orthopedics Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, and founder of the Department of Orthopedics of Peking University People's Hospital, passed away. Feng Chuanhan's departure has made the medical and educational circles mourn.

Feng Chuanhan devoted his life to the clinical and basic research of orthopedics, and he promoted the development of hand surgery, shoulder joint surgery and bone oncology in China. He also actively participated in medical education and cultivated a large number of academic backbones. He spent his life depicting the development trajectory of modern orthopedics in China.

Committed to studying medicine, in order to solve the people's suffering

Feng Chuanhan was born on January 26, 1914 in Hankou, Hubei Province, the son of a doctor at the Jiang'an Railway Hospital. In Feng Chuanhan's memory, his favorite thing to do as a child was to see how his father diagnosed and treated his illness. The moral demeanor of his father and the barren suffering of his compatriots have engraved a deep imprint on Feng Chuanhan's young soul, which has also become the original driving force for him to study medicine and solve the sufferings of the people.

In 1932, Feng Chuanhan was admitted to the pre-medical department of Yenching University. In 1935, he was admitted to the Union Medical College with honors. In 1940, he graduated from Union Medical College with a doctorate and remained a surgical resident at Union Medical College. Unexpectedly, the joy of just putting on a white coat and becoming a young doctor had not yet faded, and Feng Chuanhan encountered the biggest turning point in his life.

On December 8, 1941, the Japanese invading China occupied the Union Hospital and ordered the hospital to be disbanded, and all the staff were forced to leave. Feng Chuanhan's friends and colleagues have left Beijing, some have gone south, some have returned to their hometowns, and he has also been confused for a time. In the end, Feng Chuanhan decided to stay in Beijing and followed Zhong Huilan, Lin Qiaozhi, Meng Jimao and other experts to work at Beijing Central Hospital (the predecessor of Peking University People's Hospital). Founded in 1918, Beijing Central Hospital was the first general hospital established and managed by Chinese self-funded. In 1942, Feng Chuanhan served as the chief surgical resident of the hospital.

Painstakingly and alone, to promote the development of orthopedics in China

In 1944, Feng Chuanhan began to engage in orthopedics and established an orthopedic group with the support of Professor Meng Jimao. In August 1949, he went to England for further studies. On October 1, 1949, Feng Chuanhan, who was far away in a foreign country, was excited to tears after hearing the news of the founding of New China. Learning for the motherland and the people makes him more energetic.

From a young doctor full of vigor and ambition, to a medical master with high moral standing and outstanding achievements, Feng Chuanhan has made indelible contributions to the development of orthopedics in China.

Feng Chuanhan founded the Department of Orthopedics of Peking University People's Hospital. He took the lead in carrying out flexor tendon injury repair surgery in China, published China's first hand surgery paper, and has deep achievements in the fields of bone tuberculosis, knee meniscal injury, habitual shoulder dislocation, bone tumor resection joint reconstruction prosthesis design and application. Feng Chuanhan is also the founder of bone and soft tissue tumor research in China, and since 1964, he has begun a series of research on bone giant cell tumors that have lasted for more than half a century. In 1982, he was invited by the American College of Orthopedic Surgeons to introduce the clinical and basic research results of Chinese osteoseoblastoma. In 1984, under the initiative of Feng Chuanhan, the first bone tumor research laboratory in China was established. The research related to giant cell tumor of bone that he presided over won the first prize of Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Achievement Award and the second prize of Scientific and Technological Progress Of the Ministry of Education.

Gan is a ladder for people, and the peach and plum are all over the world

In addition to his own deep research, Feng Chuanhan is also willing to be a ladder, constantly discovering talents, cultivating talents, and loving talents. After practicing medicine and teaching for decades, Feng Chuanhan Tao Li has spread all over the world. For him, the most gratifying thing is to see students become the mainstay of China's orthopedic development.

Guo Wei, President of the Asia-Pacific Society of Bone and Soft Tissue Oncology, Leader of the Bone Oncology Group of the Chinese Medical Association, and Director of the Bone and Soft Tissue Tumor Treatment Center of Peking University People's Hospital, is a student of Feng Chuanhan. He said that every day at noon, Professor Feng held the rice bowl and learned about the progress of our project while eating, which was the deepest memory of his doctoral career that year. After graduating with a doctorate, Guo Wei went to the United States for further study, and before leaving, Feng Chuanhan said to him: "I hope you will complete your studies as soon as possible and come back to develop bone tumor research in China."

"On my way forward, every step is permeated with Teacher Feng's education, help, encouragement and encouragement." Lu Houshan, a leader in the field of bone and joints, former president of Peking University People's Hospital, and director of the Institute of Joint Diseases of Peking University, is extremely moved whenever he mentions his teacher. Lu Houshan clearly remembers that in 1984, before he went to the United States to study, Feng Chuanhan talked with him for more than two hours, analyzing his own advantages and disadvantages, teaching learning methods abroad, and proposing to pay special attention to the mastery of scientific research ideas and means. After Lü Houshan returned to China after completing his studies, Feng Chuanhan helped him set up the Joint Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Research Center of Peking University People's Hospital, and came to check rooms every week to discuss complex cases. Together, they overcame many difficulties such as high knee deformity, severe osteoporosis, and severe lack of muscle strength in total knee surface replacement surgery for patients with advanced severe rheumatoid arthritis.

The late Du Ruyu, former president of Peking University People's Hospital, medical educator and famous hospital administrator, when recalling his teacher Feng Chuanhan, loved to use the phrase "throughout his life, he benefited a lot" to describe.

Widely involved in erudition, do not do experts to do "miscellaneous" home

When it comes to Feng Chuanhan, most people will define him as an orthopedic expert, but Feng Chuanhan himself does not think so. He often said: "I am a 'miscellaneous' family, not an expert." My goal is to be versatile, broad and profound. ”

Doctors, teachers, researchers, administrators, but also did the management of societies and publishing houses, completed the work of overseas assistance assigned by the former ministry of health, and the exclusive interview work of the overseas delegation... A detailed count of the areas in which Feng Chuanhan is involved is indeed broad enough; summarizing his achievements is indeed profound enough, and behind this is the spirit of tireless and diligent work. These achievements and experiences, which are considered great by others, are, in his own opinion, just "doing what he should do." His evaluation of himself is also a simple two words - diligent, he always said, I am just a diligent person, willing to be a hard-working student for a lifetime.

In 2003, the Orthopedic Branch of the Chinese Medical Association prepared to edit the history of orthopedic development, and Feng Chuanhan became the best candidate for editor-in-chief. At that time, Feng Chuanhan, who was already 89 years old, happily accepted this heavy task. From collecting deeds and materials, checking and verifying, repeatedly deliberating, and sorting out the context, it took him only 6 months to complete the speech, pictures and nearly 200,000 words of book manuscript. In 2004, the 90-year-old Feng Chuanhan presided over the compilation and printing of "60 Years of Growth and Development of the Department of Orthopedics of Peking University People's Hospital". At the age of 100, he still cares about national construction and medical development, and reads and writes every day.

Remembrance is for better inheritance and development. Feng Chuanhan is gone, but the monument of the times he erected with his body still deeply enlightens and strongly inspires future generations. (Reporter Tian Yating)
