In 1998, Hua Yiwei retired. With his fame, there were many opportunities to go to the society to make a lot of money, but he still stuck to the front line of clinical work in the hospital, never wanting to organize special care.

Over seventy years old, he still insists on doing more than 100 surgeries a year, sometimes for more than ten hours, often tired and sweaty, and both layers of surgical gowns are soaked with sweat.
Due to physical weakness, in order to insist on operating on patients, he specially prepared a high stool, but he could not hold on, so he sat on the stool to operate on the patient.
Until July 25, 2006, when Hua Yiwei was initially diagnosed with stomach cancer, he still calmly walked into the operating room and successfully operated on the patient who had made an appointment. It was his last surgery in 56 years.
For the treatment of gastric cancer, because it was already advanced at the time of discovery, Hua Yiwei received conventional treatment and underwent total gastrectomy surgery. After the operation, his reflux situation was very serious, the esophagus was always burning and painful, the throat was also inflamed, and even the eustachian tube was stimulated very painfully.
The pain of total gastrectomy surgery was not over, and Hua Yiwei received chemotherapy again, doing a total of 8 times a month. After the end of the chemotherapy, he was still nauseated and vomiting, and under such circumstances, he underwent a second operation, which resulted in a serious infection of the abdominal cavity, and the operation was not successful. Looking at him in such pain, many medical staff cried, and he acted calmly, always smiling.

In the last days of his life, especially after doing total gastrectomy, Hua Yiwei suffered great pain, but he was still concerned about the medical cause and made a profound reflection on the treatment methods of stomach cancer.
He said: "I have done so many surgeries before, but I do not understand the pain of post-operative patients. I didn't expect the situation to be so serious, I didn't expect the patient to be so painful. Total gastrectomy brings not only the problem of eating, but also the problem of postoperative reflux... Do a total gastric resection, the patient suffers too much pain, when doing gastric resection in the future, can not be completely resected, even if a little stomach is left, it is stronger than total resection, the patient is not so painful. ”
After receiving surgical treatment, Hua Yiwei endured the pain and regarded himself as a "living textbook" to teach medical skills to clinicians.
He found the director of the pathology department, shook the other person's hand, and said: "My condition has not been diagnosed after many examinations, and all the complications that may be seen after the operation have appeared at the same time, which I have never encountered in my 56 years of medical practice, so I must do an autopsy to see if I can find something, or to accumulate a little experience for future generations." ”
Hua Yiwei had a duty and innocence throughout his life, and regarded his conduct as more important than his life. In his 56 years as a doctor, he has never received a red envelope or taken a drug rebate.
Hua Yiwei once had small bowel cancer surgery for Zhang Qiuhai's wife. After the operation, Zhang Qiuhai gave a tie clip box to Hua Yiwei, saying that it was a souvenir. Hua Yiwei opened it and found that there was 1,000 yuan inside, and he was busy chasing it out, but Zhang Qiuhai had already left.
Later, he never found the opportunity to return the 1,000 yuan, so he stored this red envelope in Zhang Qiuhai's name in the bank near the hospital, ready to have the opportunity to return to Zhang Qiuhai.

Lying on the hospital bed, Hua Yiwei was still worried about this matter, and solemnly instructed his family that they must find ways to find Zhang Qiuhai and return the red envelope.
