Located at 147 Fuxing West Road, Xuhui District, Shanghai, The Former Residence of Ke Ling is a two-story room 203 in a small Western-style apartment building. In this large area with the "Architecture of all Nations Expo", it is as simple and meaningful as Mr. Kolding's human style.
From the time Kolding lived in this place in 1959 until his death in 2000, Mr. Kolding's family created and lived in this small space for more than 40 years. It was also here that I had extensive contacts with a large number of contemporary cultural masters such as Ba Jin, Bing Xin, Ding Ling, Shen Congwen, Qian Zhongshu, Yang Dai, Xia Yan, Yang Hansheng, etc.
Kolding's life was a legendary one. Born in Guangzhou in 1909 in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province, Ke Ling dropped out of school after graduating from primary school due to his family's poverty. At the age of 15, he went to work as a teacher in elementary school, and after four years he became the principal of elementary school. During this period, he began to publish works, entered the literary world, and was praised as a young talent.
In 1931, the 22-year-old Ke Ling editor-in-chief of the Children's Times was successful, and since then he has embarked on the road of a generation of famous editors of Chinese newspaper history and formed an indissoluble relationship with literary creation.
During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Ke Ling successively edited the "Salvation Daily", "Wen Wei Po" supplement "Century Wind", "National Voice" and other publications to awaken the people and publicize the anti-Japanese resistance. He was arrested twice by the Japanese gendarmes for the seizure of publications by the Japanese, but after being rescued by many parties, he withdrew to the rear.
Ke Ling, who returned to Shanghai from Hong Kong in 1949 as vice president and deputy editor-in-chief of Wen Wei Po and editor-in-chief of Popular Film, also participated in the first Wen Dynasty held in Beiping.
In 1959, after moving into this small Western-style apartment building, he created or adapted film scripts and literary works such as "The City That Never Sleeps", "The Legend of Autumn", and "Corrosion". In this humble house, an influential literary space was created.
From a distance, the Curling House is a separate garden villa, but inside is actually a separate apartment building. Among them, one set on the first floor, two sets on the second floor, and one set on the third floor, and each set has a separate kitchen, living room and bathroom, which does not affect each other. Kolding lives in Room 203 on the second floor.
The former residence of Curing, which is now open to the public, actually occupies only the first and second floors of the east side of the entire small building. The first floor is arranged as the exhibition hall of Ke Ling's life and letters, and the second floor restores the state in which Ke Ling lived. All the furnishings, including the living room, study, bedroom, kitchen, etc., have completely reproduced the working and living environment according to the original appearance of the time.
The most impressive impression of The Former Residence of Kolding is that there are many books! The tall bookcases in the study almost occupy two walls, the living room is very conspicuous and the rows of books are filled with bookcases, and the balcony in the bedroom has become a small study.
The set of twenty-four books collected by Ke Ling during his lifetime is extremely precious. It is said that when President Nixon visited China that year, the Chinese side hoped to donate this set of books to the US president to promote cultural exchanges between China and the West. However, when the staff came to the door, it coincided with the death of his father-in-law. In this way, this precious collection of books has been preserved to this day.
As a cultural master, Kolding is in a high position and holds several positions, and from the home where he has lived for more than 40 years, he can not see a modern and fashionable piece of furniture or home appliances.
Simple furnishings, simple furniture, ordinary living utensils, can see its frugal and simple living habits and a peaceful and happy attitude to life. This is really unimaginable for today's slightly famous celebrities.
