Sun Wen: Strong teams in Europe and the United States are not out of reach Women's football development must have enough patience

After the Chinese women's football team ended the first two group matches of the Tokyo Olympic Games, Sun Wen, who is currently vice president of the Chinese Football Association, was interviewed by a reporter from Shanghai Morning News and talked about the topic of women's football.

Feelings about the overall level of women's football at this year's Olympic Games

Sun Wen: Judging from the game, the overall level of women's football is still relatively close, and the so-called strong team is not very far away. For example, the Brazilian team in our same group, their average age is also more than 30 years old, which shows that their youth training is not doing well. Although the overall level of European teams is relatively high, the status of women may limit their development.

Talking about the future development of women's football

Sun Wen: The key is still ourselves, there are many good seedlings among the young players of women's football now, the key is to improve at the technical and tactical level, once the golden age is missed, it will be difficult to find a supplement later. In addition, the level of grassroots coaches should be improved, the road of combining sports and education needs to be further explored, and we must have enough patience for the growth of gifted children. The top priority is to select good seedlings and improve efficiency.

Reminisce about your Olympic experience

Sun Wen: In fact, I am more concerned about the process of the competition than about winning the gold medal. I was very impressed by the '96 Olympics in Atlanta, when the group stage was in Miami, because it was the first time, so everyone was very excited, it was very hot, many of the players were cramping, and later learned from athletes from other countries, we also used ice therapy. The reversal against Brazil impressed me, the final was to play the United States, when the atmosphere in the dressing room before the game was bursting, everyone wanted to fight for the championship, quite enthusiastic, but at that time, the overall strength of the United States was also relatively strong, so it was normal to lose to them in the final, and we were not discouraged and could accept it. Later, when the Sydney Olympics failed to qualify, the competition was really fierce, and the champions and runners-up were all in our group.
