One of Cao Yu's masterpieces that is "the most difficult to express"

"The earth is somber, and life is hidden in it." At the beginning of the script of "Wilderness", Mr. Cao Yu wrote a different kind of vitality. Compared with several representative works such as "Thunderstorm", "Sunrise", "Beijinger" and so on, "Wilderness" pays more attention to the use of expressionist and symbolist techniques, and digs deeper into the complexity and multi-faceted nature of human nature, which also makes the play the most difficult to express in Mr. Cao Yu's plays.

Judging from the order of creation, "Wilderness" is Cao Yu's third work after "Thunderstorm" and "Sunrise". In 1936, while teaching and performing at the Nanjing National Theatre, Cao Yu's residence was located near the Sipailou (now the site of the Sipailou Campus of Southeast University in Xuanwu District, Nanjing), diagonally opposite the Kuomintang Tiger Bridge First Model Prison. According to his later recollection, when he was conceiving and writing the script of "Wilderness", he often heard the screams of torturing prisoners from prison, which made him soberly aware of the sinister social situation at that time. He also thought of his childhood, Xuanhua Town, a major northern military town where his father Wan Dezun served as a town guard, and he also saw poor peasants being beaten to pieces in the lobby. The pair of stone lions at the entrance of the gate had once daunted him like a magic beast--all kinds of ugliness in real society were churning in his heart... This is the background of the era in which "The Wilderness" was created.

Wilderness has been controversial since its inception, and it is confronted with greater differences in understanding than Sunrise. Cao Yu once said, "For an ordinary professional troupe, playing "Thunderstorm" will be successful, acting "Sunrise" will be sensational, and playing "Wilderness" will fail because it is too difficult to perform..." However, facts have also proved that excellent works often have strong vitality, and to this day, on the theater stage, they still retain a place in "Wilderness". On the occasion of commemorating the centenary of Cao Yu's birth (2010), Beijing Renyi invited well-known director Chen Liyi to rearrange the play. That version of "Wilderness" was starred by Hu Jun, Xu Fan, Pu Cunxin, And Lü.

New Presentation of Old Works "Interpreting the Proposition of Life from the Perspective of Youth"

From "Sunrise" and "Thunderstorm" to the staged "Wilderness", Beijing Renyi embodies an open and innovative attitude with a new presentation of a series of Cao Yu's classic works, allowing the audience to feel that the classic is truly "inexhaustible and endless". In the view of young director Yan Rui, "one play and one soul" is the biggest charm of Cao Yu's works, and grasping the soul of the play lays the style and style of the work.

"'Wilderness' is a relatively rare work in Cao Yu's works that use the countryside as the background of creation, and it has expressionist and symbolist techniques from the text, providing a lot of space and multiple possibilities for the second degree of creation." Yan Rui said. Let the audience feel the original vitality full of "earthy" sense, "return to human nature, and express the grand proposition of life that people have longed for life and the release of death, through the perspective of young people, reflect the sense of the times, and present the most sincere and simple stage expression." ”

All along, "Wilderness" is widely regarded as the "most difficult to perform" work written by Mr. Cao Yu, which not only has a profound excavation and reflection on human nature, but also is full of symbolism and mystery. Therefore, from the content to the form, the new row of "Wilderness" uses the combination of freehand and realism to externalize the spatial, psychological and realistic images.

"When we are on the stage, we are actually showing the relationship between heaven, earth and people." Yan Rui said that through the performance of actors and stage means, a psychological feeling and the surrounding environment are integrated. Among them, the sense of mystery and fear runs through the whole process, creating a unique atmosphere that belongs to "The Wilderness", as the critic said of "The Wilderness", "Here, fear is an invisible flower snake". Let the audience be able to blend in, to perceive the atmosphere, so as to enter the spiritual world of the people in the play.

The young generation made their debut on stage and went to "the place where the golden seeds were laid."

The new row of "Wilderness" really reflects the stage energy of the young creative team of Beijing Renyi. Among them are the new forces who have recently entered the hospital, and there are also the young generation that have been accumulating and matured on the stage of human arts. As the first young director to independently direct a drama in Beijing Renyi, Yan Rui not only had a series of stage images that audiences were familiar with and loved before, but also received widespread attention for co-directing and starring in "The Death of a Famous Artist". It is worth mentioning that Yan Rui himself is also the backbone of young actors in the art of renyi, and the drama "Antiques" in which he participated was performed at the Capital Theater in October.

Jin Han, who plays Qiu Hu, in recent years, has been well known and recognized by the audience with the roles of Er Dezi in "Tea House", Lu Dahai in "Thunderstorm", Xiangzi in "Camel Xiangzi"; Zhang Keying, the actor of Hua Jinzi, is a newcomer who only joined the theater this year, and it is worth looking forward to the audience for the first time to play such a role; Fu Yao, who plays Jiao Mu, has a variety of role types on the stage, and has performed well in Chinese and foreign dramas such as "Doll's House", "Hypnosis", "Community Neighborhood Committee"; and young actor Lei Jia and "The Wilderness" More with an incomprehensible fate, he played the role of Jiao Daxing in the previous version of "Wilderness". As a young "veteran" in the crew, his years of polishing on the stage and the stage experience of playing different roles have become the accumulation of this performance; coupled with Chang Wuye played by Lian Xudong and the white fool played by Wei Jiacheng, the creative team they formed was both young and full of courage to face challenges.

Such a combination makes the new row of "Wilderness" not only a well-known work for the audience, but also a set of fresh and familiar stage faces. Talking about how to create, this group of young people used the lines of the characters in the play to go to "the place where the gold is laid." During the rehearsal process, they communicate with each other, discuss together, and run to their own "poetry and distance" with full of momentum. I believe that through the works, the audience can see the creative power of young people. It is reported that this work will meet the audience at the Cao Yu Theater of Beijing International Theater Center on October 30.
