After graduating with a Ph.D. in 1999, he worked as a full-time lawyer at Davis Law Firm in the United States, and returned to China five years later, starting a 14-year career at Chinese Minmin Bank.

From 2004 to 2018, Li Bo served as deputy director and director of the Department of Articles and Laws of the Chinese Bank, the Second Department of Monetary Policy, and the Department of Monetary Policy. He has played an important role in the reform of state-owned banks, anti-money laundering legislation, the internationalization of the renminbi, and the construction of China's macro-prudential policy framework.

Li Bo has also served in various public sectors in China, including vice chairman of the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese from 2018 to 2019 and vice mayor of Chongqing from 2019 to 2021, where he was responsible for financial development and regulation, foreign trade and attracting foreign investment.
