Podiceps cristatus , also known as crested crested crestatus , is a species of bird in the genus Podiceps cristatus .
Distribution in China: Summer is found in northeast to southwest, Inner Mongolia (northeast Hulunbuir League to western weak water), Ningxia, Xinjiang (west), Qinghai Lake, Tibet (western Pangong Lake to southern Yangzhuoyong Lake), migration to the southwestern northeast, north China provinces, west to Shanxi, Shaanxi, Hebei, Henan In the south of the Yangtze River, west to Yunnan, Tibet (south), rare to Taiwan
It is a winter migratory bird. It inhabits coastal areas, lakes, reservoirs, rivers and other waters. Its diet consists of fish, shrimp, aquatic insects, and some aquatic plants. Often in pairs or small groups. Good at swimming, diving, not good at flying. Its nests are mostly located in shallow water between aquatic plants.
It inhabits rivers, lakes, ponds and other waters in low mountains and plains, and has strong diving ability, feeding on mollusks, fish, crustaceans and aquatic plants. The breeding period is from May to July, nesting in reeds or grasses with good hidden conditions, using reeds and aquatic grasses as nest materials, and laying 4 to 5 eggs per nest.
