In the IELTS Reading test, orientation is a crucial skill.
Although many duck test friends are already familiar with the skills and methods of positioning, why can't they accurately locate and find the right answer when they actually do the question?
Today, we're going to explore some of the causes of positioning errors and see if you've encountered the following situations as well.
Part1
Nervous mentality, missing the point
Kao Ya is nervous and blindly pursues speed, but the speed is not reached. If you are nervous, you may miss the point!
So, do the first step of reading, adjust your mentality, and don't be so nervous!
If there is a good positioning question (there are special keywords), you can give priority to positioning the positioning question, and then combine the principle of the same order of the inscription.
In the case of the occurrence of the original word, there are two levels of positioning:
1. Special word positioning, this step must be fast and accurate, quickly lock the question point, and the special word positioning must be all won.
2. What if there are no special words? You can use noun positioning, if you have strong ability to deal with long and difficult sentences, when locating: first combine the principle of the same order of the inscription, roughly delineate the question point, and quickly sweep the subject and object of each sentence. Because the subject and object are basically nouns, they can be found quickly.
If you don't have a good grasp of the sentence structure and components of the test duck itself, then 'hard scan', use your eyes as a scanner, make sure you see every word, but don't think about the meaning of each word until you quickly scan the word.
However, it is important to note that not all nouns can be used as locators.
The reason why we first chose a noun as a locator is that its meaning is relatively unique and clear, and it is not easy to replace, but there is a category of nouns that does not meet this characteristic - abstract nouns.
Like reason, idea, and definition are all so-called abstract nouns, which cannot be used as locators because abstract nouns are unstable and volatile.
Part2
Predicting the original text can also be located
There are some questions in the exam, but the test duck still doesn't know how to position them after seeing them, because the keywords are too difficult for such questions.
For example:
What is the smallest species of Bovid called?
If a student sees this topic, his heart must be broken.
Bovid is the subject word of the article, the article is repeated many times, and it does not have the value of positioning. How to position it?
At this time, you can actually predict the form of the answer and the original text to locate.
When it comes to the size of a species, either the height is said or the weight is said.
Therefore, combined with the principle of the same order of the inscription, go to the text to quickly lock the place where the height or weight appears, quickly locate it, and predict whether it is the problem point.
Part3
The essence of positioning is to quickly scan the original text
During the exam, the number of questions in which the original words of the keywords appear is about 25-30. However, there may be more than one keyword in the text, so it is necessary to quickly scan the place where the keyword appears, quickly mention the main stem, understand the general idea, and determine whether it is the problem point through the meaning.
This is why the question should be read first, and then the key words should be drawn to locate, because it is necessary to determine whether it is the question point through the meaning, which is one of the reasons for scanning.
The second reason is that when the examiner sets the questions, he will divide the difficulty level and select students of different levels. Therefore, there are about 10 questions or so, and it is difficult to find the same keyword, and it can only be located by meaning, recognition and synonymous substitution.
Of course, when locating such a topic, it is still necessary to combine the principle of the same order of the inscription, first roughly lock the approximate paragraph of the question point, and then quickly scan the sentence, clarify the general idea, and locate it by identifying synonymous substitutions.
There are several forms of synonymous substitution in IELTS reading, which also need to be mastered by the test duck:
✅ Synonym group/synonym group interchange
✅词性互转,如loss-lost, confidence-confident
✅抽象具体/上下义词的同义替换,如fire fighting tools-- fire engine, helicopter等
✅ A high level of summarization and generalization similar to a summary
Part4
can't be positioned, in fact, the strength needs to be improved
The key to improving reading skills is to expand your vocabulary and the ability to deal with long and difficult sentences.
After mastering a certain vocabulary foundation, you can improve your ability to process sentence structures, quickly deal with long and difficult sentences, and when you read sentences, don't just stay on the surface of English, be sure to grasp the key points and understand the meaning of sentences!! (emphasis here)
In short, the road to slaughtering ducks is "obstructive and long", you must not always want to rush to succeed, and playing the basic skills is the most important step!
