On October 12, the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce (hereinafter referred to as the "All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce") released the list of the top 500 private enterprises in China in 2024 and related research and analysis reports. It is reported that this year, the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce organized the 26th large-scale private enterprise survey, with a total of 9,642 enterprises with operating income of more than 500 million yuan in 2023 participating, of which the top 500 enterprises in operating income are the top 500 private enterprises in China in 2024.
The survey results show that in the face of the complex and severe international environment and the arduous and arduous tasks of domestic reform, development and stability, the top 500 private enterprises have conscientiously practiced the new development concept, focused on the main business, refined the industry, strengthened independent innovation, and taken the path of high-quality development.
Judging from the data, in 2023, the total operating income of the top 500 private enterprises will be 41.91 trillion yuan, with an average household of 83.822 billion yuan, an increase of 5.22% over the previous year; the total assets were 49.85 trillion yuan, and the average household was 99.694 billion yuan, an increase of 7.64% over the previous year; The net profit after tax was 1.69 trillion yuan, and the average household was 3.385 billion yuan, an increase of 2.97% over the previous year. It is worth noting that a total of 30 of the top 500 private enterprises were shortlisted in this year's Fortune Global 500 list.
According to the top 500 list, JD.com, Alibaba (China) Co., Ltd., Hengli Group Co., Ltd., Huawei Investment Holding Co., Ltd., Zhejiang Rongsheng Holding Group Co., Ltd., Tencent Holdings Co., Ltd., BYD Co., Ltd., Shenghong Holding Group Co., Ltd., Shandong Weiqiao Venture Group Co., Ltd., and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co., Ltd. are among the top 10.
Among them, in the fields of finance and financial technology, Taikang Insurance Group Co., Ltd. (ranked 20th), Ant Technology Group Co., Ltd. (ranked 44th), China Minsheng Bank Co., Ltd. According to the survey report, among the top 500 private enterprises, there are 97 enterprises with operating income of more than 100 billion yuan in 2023, an increase of 2 from the previous year; There were 9 companies with more than 500 billion yuan, an increase of 1 from the previous year.
Further, there are 392 enterprises whose operating income increased over the previous year, of which 285 companies increased by more than 5% and 182 companies increased by more than 10%. Among the 97 enterprises with operating income exceeding 100 billion yuan, 60 enterprises have an increase of more than 5%, 40 enterprises have an increase of more than 10%, and 18 enterprises have an increase of more than 20%.
At the same time, there are 89 enterprises with assets of more than 100 billion yuan, an increase of three over the previous year; There were 15 companies with more than 500 billion yuan, an increase of 4 over the previous year. There were 386 enterprises with an increase in assets over the previous year, of which 270 were with an increase of more than 5% and 163 were with an increase of more than 10%.
Overall, among the 47 industries distributed in the top 500 private enterprises, 25 industries have increased their total operating income and total assets over the previous year, mainly involving electrical machinery and equipment manufacturing, computer, communication and other electronic equipment manufacturing, software and information technology services, etc.
In terms of operating efficiency, in 2023, the net profit after tax of the top 500 private enterprises will be 1.69 trillion yuan, with an average household of 3.385 billion yuan, an increase of 2.97% over the previous year. There are 74 enterprises with after-tax net profits of more than 5 billion yuan, 34 enterprises with more than 10 billion yuan, and 15 enterprises with more than 20 billion yuan. Among the top 500 private enterprises, there are 268 enterprises with a year-on-year increase in after-tax net profit, of which 241 have an above-average increase.
The industrial structure continued to be optimized, with the manufacturing industry accounting for 66.40%
The dominant position of manufacturing in the national economy is further revealed in the research report. The report pointed out that the top 500 private enterprises are more focused on industry, and the number of manufacturing enterprises accounts for 66.40% of the top 500, and the proportion has increased for three consecutive years.
The total operating income of manufacturing enterprises in the top 500 private enterprises was 27.53 trillion yuan, an increase of 8.31% over the previous year, accounting for 65.68% of the top 500; the total assets were 22.86 trillion yuan, an increase of 15.52% over the previous year, accounting for 45.86% of the top 500; the total net profit after tax was 0.95 trillion yuan, basically the same as the previous year, accounting for 55.99% of the top 500; The total tax payment was 0.85 trillion yuan, an increase of 2.02% over the previous year, accounting for 65.66% of the top 500.
It is worth noting that digitalization and green transformation have become the common choices of most of the top 500 private enterprises. According to the data, more than 60% of enterprises implement digital transformation through the application of digital products and services, relying on professional digital service providers, and promoting intelligent manufacturing. 84.20% of the enterprises have adopted measures to promote green and low-carbon transformation, such as applying green and low-carbon technologies and equipment, introducing and training professional talents, and promoting the green and coordinated development of the industrial chain.
In addition, in the face of the development opportunities brought by emerging technologies, the top 500 private enterprises actively adjusted their industrial layout: 72.20% of the enterprises developed emerging industries and future industries by exploring new scenarios, laying out emerging tracks, and incubating new formats and new models.
Not only that, the top 500 private enterprises have also taken the initiative to integrate into the global market, with total exports of 297.175 billion US dollars in 2023, an increase of 7.53% over the previous year; It accounted for 8.79% of China's total exports, an increase of 1.03 percentage points over the previous year, and the proportion remained higher for five consecutive years. At the same time, 206 enterprises carried out overseas investment, an increase of 9.57% over the previous year, of which the number of overseas investment projects of electrical machinery and equipment manufacturing enterprises was relatively large.

Innovation is the eternal theme of the enterprise, and only by continuous innovation can private enterprises have lasting and vigorous vitality.
The continuous enhancement of innovation ability is one of the important development characteristics of the top 500 private enterprises. According to the survey report, among the top 500 private enterprises, the total R&D expenses of the enterprises actually reported are 1.05 trillion yuan, the total number of R&D personnel is 1.0238 million, and the average R&D investment intensity is 2.66%.
Among them, there are 159 enterprises with R&D expenses of more than 1 billion yuan, and 33 enterprises with more than 5 billion yuan; There are 17 enterprises with more than 10 billion yuan, involving five industries, including computer, communication and other electronic equipment manufacturing, Internet and related services, and automobile manufacturing. There were 353 enterprises with R&D personnel accounting for more than 3% of the total number of employees, an increase of 27 over the previous year; There were 188 enterprises with more than 10%, an increase of 13 from the previous year.
At the same time, the top 500 private enterprises have 666,700 valid patents, an increase of 9.39% over the previous year; Among them, the number of domestic effective patents increased by 8.86%, and the number of international effective patents increased by 13.61%. There are 29,900 international standards led or participated in, and 11,300 standards are published on the "Enterprise Standard Information Public Service Platform". In addition, the number of high-tech enterprises, technology-based small and medium-sized enterprises, and state-level specialized and new "little giant" enterprises owned by the top 500 private enterprises increased by 118, 52, and 87 respectively compared with the previous year.
It is worth mentioning that while promoting its own steady development, the top 500 private enterprises also actively fulfill their social responsibilities. According to the research report, the total tax payment of the top 500 private enterprises reached 1.29 trillion yuan, an increase of 3.11% over the previous year. There are 244 enterprises with a tax amount of more than 1 billion yuan, accounting for 48.80% of the top 500; There are 63 enterprises with more than 5 billion yuan, accounting for 12.60% of the top 500.
At the same time, the total number of employees in the top 500 private enterprises was 10,657,500, with an average of 21,300 households. 244 enterprises with more than 10,000 employees, accounting for 48.80% of the top 500; There are 48 enterprises with more than 50,000 people, accounting for 9.60% of the top 500. Enterprises in the Internet and related service industries employed the most, reaching 1,212,300, accounting for 11.38% of the total employment in the top 500.
In addition, 67.00% of the top 500 private enterprises participated in the "Ten Thousand Enterprises Prospering Ten Thousand Villages" action to help consolidate the achievements of poverty alleviation and rural revitalization; 85.80% of the enterprises participated in various forms of social donation activities. At the same time, the top 500 private enterprises have steadily promoted environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) work, and 47.20% of the enterprises have standardized the disclosure of ESG information.
