As protests demanding the demolition of illegally built mosques intensified in Himachal Pradesh, a Muslim group said there were no illegal mosques in the state, but delays in approving maps in state government records caused problems, Indian media reported.
On September 30, India religious groups holding a pilgrimage in Kullu demanding the demolition of the mosque clashed with police. Under tight security, protesters of the "India Hajj pilgrimage to Dharamjagalan" marched from the Hanuman Temple to the Aqala Mosque. Large numbers of people, including women, carried saffron flags and slogans calling for the demolition of the mosque in Kullu. Musicians playing local musical instruments and women dressed in traditional costumes lead the procession.
On 30 August, a clash between a Muslim hairdresser and an India businessman in the Maliana area on the outskirts of Shimla turned into a community issue, beginning calls for the demolition of the illegally built mosque. India religious groups have been demanding the demolition of what they call unauthorized mosques, while residents at large have demanded the identification of outsiders entering the state.
Meanwhile, Nahim · Ahmed, chairman of the Mandi Muslim Welfare Committee, said on September 30: "None of the mosques in Himachal Pradesh are illegal, but there have been delays in map approval and other related procedures. If we find illegal construction, we will demolish it ourselves. ”
He said that on September 29, representatives of the Muslim community held a meeting in the Balkh area of Mandi. It was decided to set up a state level ethnic minority community council who will meet with the state chief minister to brief him on the current situation, Ahmad said.
He said Muslim leaders believe that some people are spreading hatred and that such behavior should be curbed. He added that everyone who comes from outside, regardless of their religion, should be tested. Earlier on September 30, the Kurou district authorities said the mosque in Akalabazar was not illegal. He said there were some discrepancies between the size of the mosque in the state government's records and the actual size, the district authorities said, adding that the case to regularize it was pending before the town and village planning department. They say that the total area of the mosque is 980 square meters, and the deviation was found to be about 150 square meters.
The Jama Mosque in Kullu is a pre-independence building and is documented in the State Government's Gazette Notice dated August 15, 1970.
Previously, on September 11, 10 people were injured during a protest in the Shimla region calling for the demolition of part of the mosque's buildings.
Two days later, a similar protest broke out in Mandy, where police had to use water cannons to disperse the protesters.
