Not long ago, the first National Fitness Competition North China Radio Gymnastics Competition was held in Tianjin, attracting more than 200 competitors from Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Inner Mongolia, Shanxi and other places. Radio gymnastics, a form of fitness that people are accustomed to, has been going on in mainland China for more than 70 years.
On November 24, 1951, the first set of broadcast gymnastics in New China was officially promulgated. From December 1, it will be broadcast to the whole country through the Central People's Radio. Since then, millions of people have been doing exercises along with radio music as soon as the horn sounded every day, setting off a nationwide fitness boom in radio gymnastics. This is the common memory of a generation of Chinese, and it is also the epitome of mass sports at that time.
75 years have passed. Now, radio gymnastics has been iterated to its ninth version, and the way of fitness for all has changed dramatically.
Located in the heart of Shenzhen, Beacon Hill Sports Park is bustling with activity every weekend evening. Whether it is a 5G smart trail, an outdoor smart gym, a yoga area, or a football field, basketball court, or badminton court, sports enthusiasts can always find their own world.
The Futian Seaside Ecological Sports Park, which is not far from Beacon Hill, has also been completed and put into operation in recent years. This ecological, leisure and sports aerial sports field has two standard 11-a-side football fields, four 8-a-side football fields and two 5-a-side football fields. And it is a sports field built above a water purification plant, which is also the first in the country.
This is true in the city, and the countryside is no exception. 1,500 kilometers away from Shenzhen, Langao County, Ankang City, located in southern Shaanxi, is located at the northern foot of Bashan. In the past, due to the lack of sports facilities, the local people lacked effective fitness methods. Nowadays, with the improvement of sports facilities, the fitness methods of the masses are also diverse.
These days are just in time for the harvest festival, and on the newly built village basketball court, the Shaanxi version of "Village BA" is being staged. 78 teams from the surrounding five provinces and cities will play more than 200 basketball games here.
With the continuous upgrading of the public service of national fitness, the problem of where to go for mass fitness has been gradually alleviated. By the end of 2023, the per capita sports area in mainland China will reach 2.89 square meters, achieving the target of 2.6 square meters proposed in the 14th Five-Year Plan two years ahead of schedule. The proportion of people who regularly participate in physical exercise in mainland China has reached 37.2 per cent.
This is the Beijing National Tennis Center, where the annual China Open tennis tournament is being held. Since its inception in 2004, China Tennis has become an annual festival for many tennis enthusiasts. In 2024, because Zheng Qinwen won the women's singles championship at the Paris Olympics, the already hot tennis event will be more favored by the people.
In recent years, with the vigorous development of national fitness activities, the huge national fitness crowd is gradually providing a broader foundation for the selection of competitive sports.
Especially in table tennis, badminton, tennis, skiing and other sports, the family-centered training model is making the training mode of competitive sports in the mainland more diversified.
From the development of sports and the enhancement of people's physical fitness to the national fitness and the Olympic Games, sports make life better, and China's sports have embarked on an extraordinary development journey in the past 75 years.
