Some people sit for a long time and stand up suddenly, and the stars fly in front of them, so they can only continue to sit, and even want to lie down. When you feel like the world is spinning and your head is spinning, is the whole world shaking? What the hell is vertigo all about?
In this issue, Wang Ruiming, chief TCM physician of the Department of Neurology of Hangzhou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, is invited to take you to the truth of vertigo.
Vertigo can be divided into 5 types, including central vertigo, ocular vertigo, cardiogenic vertigo, otogenic vertigo, and vertigo caused by cervical spondylosis.
01
The reason behind central vertigo
Central vertigo accounts for about 9% of all types of vertigo, but its cause is related to cerebrovascular disease, which needs to be paid close attention.
Central vertigo is mainly caused by posterior circulation ischemia, which is different from the vascular-rich anterior circulation system, which converges into a basilar artery, which can affect the blood supply to the entire brain after blockage, resulting in posterior circulation ischemia, cerebral infarction or hemorrhage.
The symptoms of this condition are dizziness, sweating, nausea and vomiting, which are similar to the symptoms of other vertigo attacks, so it is particularly difficult to distinguish between non-specialists.
Problems with the blood vessels in the posterior circulation can progress rapidly, and the patient may even become comatose and potentially disabled.
The golden time window for central vertigo is intravenous thrombolysis within 3 hours or arterial thrombectomy within 9 hours.
Although the proportion of central vertigo is not high, it is harmful to the body, the prognosis is poor, and the clinical manifestations of most patients are not typical, so it is particularly difficult to identify.
Director Wang said that we should pay attention to vertigo attacks in our lives and go to the hospital for professional medical examination as soon as possible to avoid delaying treatment or leaving adverse sequelae.
02
The reasons behind oculogenic vertigo
The causes of oculogenic vertigo may be related to refractive error or inappropriate prescription of glasses, fundus lesions such as fundus arteriosclerosis, and prolonged use of the eye.
Oculogenic vertigo can usually be improved with a period of rest and correction of refractive errors.
