In July this year, China's Yellow (Bohai) Sea Migratory Bird Habitat (Phase II) was successfully inscribed on the World Heritage List after being reviewed by the World Heritage Committee. Chongming Dongtan is one of five newly selected migratory bird habitats on the mainland, which means that Shanghai has its first World Heritage Site.
At present, the Chongming Dongtan Bird National Nature Reserve in Shanghai has ushered in the autumn ring period. In the Huanzhi work team, there is a "whistleblower" who is over the age of sixtieth birthday - Jin Weiguo, and the bird whistle in his mouth can simulate dozens of different bird calls. It has been 26 years since the "bird whistle" was blown, and he has also changed from a "bird catcher" in the past to a "bird protector" today.
Deep in the reeds of Shanghai's Chongming Dongtan Bird National Nature Reserve, Jin Weiguo, who is in his 60s, and his apprentice have been squatting for days, tasked with using a bird whistle to imitate bird calls and attract birds.
With this skill, Lao Jin became the inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage of Chongming City, "Bird Whistle". Lao Jin told reporters that his ancestors made a living by catching birds, and he began to learn bird whistles at the age of 8, and when he was a child, he caught birds to sell, but since the establishment of the reserve in 1998, Lao Jin's identity has changed.
Jin Weiguo, Ranger Administrator of Chongming Dongtan Bird National Nature Reserve: I changed my career, they want scientific research, they want to catch some birds for ringing, and I come to catch birds during the bird hunting season. For example, when the birds migrated too much, I came to the reserve, and watched the poachers and did not let them in.
For more than 20 years, countless birds have been captured by Lao Jin for re-release.
Blowing the bird whistle and catching birds is only the first step in the ring work. Lao Jin and his apprentices handed the bird into the hands of the staff, and then put a metal ring and flag with a uniform number on the bird's calf, recorded the bird's file, and then released it. Through this metal ring, important information such as the bird's migration time, route, stopping place, and breeding place can be deciphered.
According to the records of the reserve, there are currently more than 300 species of birds in the Chongming Dongtan Nature Reserve, including 19 species of national first-class protected birds and 59 species of national second-class protected birds.
