Currently, the Toyota Supra is powered by four- and six-cylinder engines from BMW, while the GT4 version is also powered by BMW's inline six-cylinder engine. However, it was recently reported that Toyota will launch a V8-powered Supra in 2026, with a naturally aspirated 5.0-litre engine that will power the Repco Supercar Championship car.
If the Toyota engine is known by the internal codename, then the V-8 Supra gets the 2UR-GSE, an aluminum powerplant that can be found in numerous products. The IS F and GS F own it, while the RC F, LC 500 and IS 500 F Sport models are also in use. The engine is also used in the Hilux pickup truck, which won the 2019 Dakar Rally.
Toyota aims to compete in the Supercar Championship for at least five years under the Gen3 ruleset, which will be introduced in 2023. The Supra will compete with the Ford Mustang and its Coyote 5.4-liter engine. Currently, the Chevrolet team runs a Camaro with a 5.7-liter V8 engine, but since the muscle car is discontinued at the end of 2023, a mysterious replacement is in the works.
Toyota will field at least four GR Supra cars, two of which will be driven by Chaz Mostert and Ryan Wood of the Walkinshaw Andretti United team. The other team has not yet been announced. From 2026, WAU will switch from Ford Mustang Racing to Toyota Supras. It is worth mentioning that Walkinshaw Automotive Group has partnered with Toyota to convert Tundra trucks to right-hand drive in Melbourne, Australia.
With Toyota's addition, 2026 will be the first season since 2019 when the Repco Supercar Championship will have three manufacturers. Over the past decade, Volvo, Nissan, and Mercedes have also competed before abandoning the championship.
