The theme of the year: Tackling climate change and building resilient cities
The theme for 2021 is "Responding to Climate Change and Building Resilient Cities". Climate change has become a major issue affecting global sustainable development and the common destiny of mankind. As carriers of sustainable development, cities will be able to reduce disaster risks and enhance resilience to climate disasters by strengthening infrastructure to adapt to climate change and comprehensively improve urban resilience and social inclusiveness.

The 2021 World Cities Day global main event was held in Luxor, Egypt. High-level representatives from national and local governments, UN agencies, development partners, civil organizations and academic institutions exchanged innovative ideas, best practices and solutions on how cities can cope with climate change and strengthen resilience.

On October 31, 2021, the main event of World Cities Day in China and the opening ceremony of the first Global Conference on Sustainable Urban Development were held in the World Meeting Room at the North Bund in Shanghai. In accordance with the five pillars of sustainable urban development (economic, social, cultural, environmental and governance) proposed by the United Nations, the event set up five thematic forums on low-carbon economy, urban historical and cultural protection and inheritance, urban governance, ecological resilience, and new city construction, and held activities such as the China Urban Development Case Exhibition and the Shanghai International Urban and Architecture Expo.
