After nearly five years of construction, a 130-metre-high dam was erected in zambia's Cavefay River Gorge. The Xiakaifuxia Hydropower Station, built by China Power Construction Group Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "China Power Construction"), was successfully stored at the end of last year and will soon be put into operation. The total installed capacity of the Lower Kaifu Gorge Hydropower Station is 750 MW, which is expected to increase Zambia's electricity supply by 38%, which is a strong boost to the country's economic and social development.

As zambia's first large-scale hydropower station invested and developed in the past 40 years, the Lower Kaifu Gorge Hydropower Station has made useful attempts in talent training while boosting local economic and social development. In July 2017, the China Hydropower Training Institute, which was self-financed and self-built by China Power Construction, has opened 6 classes in the local area, with a total of 332 trainees successfully graduated, cultivating a group of skilled talents in the field of infrastructure construction in Zambia.

Zambian President Edgar Lungu personally inaugurated the China Hydropower Training Institute. He stressed on many occasions that the completion of hydropower stations is of great significance to Zambia's power supply and economic development. Chinese enterprises actively assume social responsibility, not only providing employment opportunities for the Zambian people, but also cultivating a large number of skilled engineering talents for zambia's future development through training institutes.

Mulia was one of the first female trainees enrolled in the training academy and chose to major in auto repair. "The courses at the academy were very interesting, and I was completely attracted to thinking about how I could learn better." Mulia recalls her time at school. With a lot of tenacity, she got her graduation certificate with the second place in the class and came to the dam operation office repair factory as a material parts manager.

"Warehouse management is not simple, you need to be familiar with the name, specifications, use and usage of each accessory, so as to improve the work efficiency of the team." Mulia gives an example, "For project construction, it is crucial to ensure the continuity of dam pouring. When transporting dump trucks for pouring concrete for maintenance or repair, I must quickly and accurately find the required accessories so that the vehicle can complete the repair and maintenance as soon as possible and return to the construction site to continue to work. ”

Qin Ping, a Chinese repairman, spoke highly of Mulia: "She is very smart and very studious. Usually when the work is not busy, I often come to help do some repair and maintenance work, and learn new knowledge and skills while doing it. Asked why, Mulia replied: "There are many kinds of machinery and equipment invested in the Lower Kaifu Gorge Hydropower Station project, and the problems faced are also diverse, and it is important for a repairman to actively participate in the repair work and accumulate experience." ”

"Chinese enterprises should actively fulfill their social responsibilities overseas." Speaking of the original intention of opening a training institute, Wang Bin, deputy secretary of the party committee of China Power Construction Group, said that in response to the "Belt and Road" initiative, China Power Construction has opened a skills training college to provide free skills training and employment positions for the local community, hoping to improve the shortage of skilled personnel in the local engineering industry.

In May 2019, the Training Institute officially entered the Zambia National Education System. Fang Zhi, dean of the college, said that the college will deepen school-enterprise cooperation with the goal of creating a "Luban workshop" and build the college into a base for cultivating high-skilled talents in the future.

Today, nearly 200 graduates of the training institute work at the Lower Kaifu Gorge Hydropower Station, distributed in a number of key work areas or departments such as laboratories, water diversion holes, dam overflow surfaces, and factories. In the eyes of Mulia and other colleagues, the imminent generation of engineering power is not only a sign that the project is about to be completed, but also fully reflects the value of their work. The hydropower station was able to run smoothly, and for them it was like being awarded a "medal of honor".
