What kind of political system to establish in China is a historical issue facing the Chinese people since modern times. In that era when foreign powers were rampant and mountains and rivers were broken, China tried various forms such as a constitutional monarchy, a parliamentary system, a multi-party system, and a presidential system, but failed to find the right answer. The bitter experience of repeated trials and failures proves that copying other countries' political systems in China does not work.
Through long-term bloody struggles and arduous explorations, the Communist Party of China (CPC) has led the people to establish a socialist country under the people's democratic dictatorship. In 1954, the founders of the People's Republic, together with more than 1,200 deputies to the National People's Congress elected by universal suffrage, convened the first session of the First National People's Congress, thus opening a new chapter in history.
That year, Shen Jilan, a 25-year-old deputy to the National People's Congress, walked out of the mountains and came to the capital Beijing. At the conference, her proposal of "equal pay for men and women for equal work" was written into the constitution. In the election of national leaders, she also cast a solemn vote as a female representative. For Shen Jilan, the fact that working women can participate in such a major national political event is "something that was unimaginable in the past."
Over the past 70 years, the people's congress system has shown strong vitality and tremendous superiority. Practice has proved that the people's congress system is a good system that conforms to the national conditions and realities of the mainland, embodies the nature of a socialist country, ensures that the people are the masters of the country, and guarantees the realization of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
