We know that Turkey is a United States NATO ally, but in the NATO military group, Turkey do not mix well, not only with United States, but even with other Western allies. For example, almost went to war with Greece and France; There are constant quarrels with United Kingdom, Germany, etc., also over Muslim immigration and the Gaza issue. In Turkey's view, it is a "gatekeeper" of Western countries, helping them block refugees from the Middle East and Africa to Europe, and collecting some "gatekeeper fees".
But from the perspective of an ally, Turkey does not receive the respect it deserves, which is particularly evident in Turkey's introduction of United States F-35 fighters. Western experts have long believed that if the "troubles" of introducing the Russian S-400 are solved Turkey, such as reselling it to other countries, it is United States possible to resell F-35 fighters to them. However, now that Turkey wants to introduce the F-35, new problems arise because Turkey has signed a 5G cooperation agreement with Huawei and China.
It was observed that, like Turkey, United States also signed an agreement with U.A.E. to sell F-35s, but after U.A.E. cooperated with China's Huawei, Biden blocked the F-35 deal with U.A.E. as soon as he took office, Turkey it could become another U.A.E.. In this regard, we will talk about two topics.
The first, before and after the introduction of the F-35 by Turkey.
Why did Turkey introduce the F-35? First, it has become the "standard" of the air forces of NATO countries, and Turkey will of course also introduce it, not to mention that the F-35 is a fifth-generation stealth fighter; Second, Turkey is one of the initial investors of the F-35 research and development, to put it bluntly, it is an "investor", the money is out, of course, you have to get the product. However, because after Turkey introduced the Russia S-400 air defense system, United States changed its tune and refused to sell the F-35 to Turkey, saying that the S-400 is not a NATO system and may leak classified data of the F-35.
It is worth noting that United States not only does not sell F-35s, but also refuses to return the R&D funds that Turkey has taken out, saying that this is sanctions against Turkey, who let you introduce equipment from NATO opponents. So, it is said that there are many NATO air defense systems, and the performance is also good, why does Turkey want to introduce Russia's F-400?
One of the most important reasons is that in 2016, there was an "attempted military coup" in Turkey, and if Putin had not provided information to Turkey President Erdogan in advance, Erdogan would not only not be able to keep his presidential position, but even his head might not be guaranteed. Against this background, Erdogan, of course, trusts Putin more, and the personal relationship between the two is good.
And after investigation, it was found that behind the "attempted military coup" there was a shadow of the West, that is, its own allies who wanted to oust themselves from power. So, of course, Erdogan was chilled, and the introduction of the S-400 from Russia is to show that NATO allies are "not credible", and Turkey hopes to use Russian air defense systems to "watch" to protect its own security.
Of course, this is also a backhand that Erdogan has left for himself, after all, arms sales also represent "providing a security umbrella". Turkey and Russia are neighbors across the Black Sea, and it is not difficult for Russia to protect Turkey.
Second, the United States is unpopular with Huawei.
It is observed that United States's crackdown on Huawei began when Trump was in office, not only United States issued relevant decrees, but also pressured allies to follow suit and move Huawei out of their own 5G plans. The first object of United States' persecution was its hardcore ally United Kingdom, in this regard, United Kingdom's then Prime Minister Johnson hesitated for more than two months, because Huawei not only set its European headquarters in United Kingdom, but also invested in United Kingdom for more than 20 years, and United Kingdom 3G/4G construction, Huawei is also a major participant.
However, United States, as it threatens Turkey and the U.A.E. today, says it does not share military intelligence with United Kingdom, does not provide it with submarine-launched nuclear missiles, etc. In the end, Johnson gave in. After that, most of the NATO countries followed United States in desperation. Only Germany was reluctant, and then-Chancellor Angela Merkel said that Germany would not introduce sanctions against suppliers from one country. Moreover, after strict inspection, Germany has not found that Huawei products "have security problems" as the United States claims.
Even so, United States' sanctions against Huawei have continued from Trump to the Biden era, and the United States does so to prevent China's development in the field of 5G and 6G.
However, more developing countries around the world have chosen to cooperate with China's Huawei, and United States' approach is unpopular. Will Turkey be threatened by United States? It's hard at the moment. On the one hand, Turkey said that if it does not sell the F-35 to me, I will introduce fifth-generation aircraft from Russia; On the other hand, Turkey is also developing its own fifth-generation fighters. Besides, Turkey has officially applied to join the BRICS, and the signal of its desire to move closer to China and Russia is very clear. In this way, who cares if United States is happy or not, whether he sells his F-35 or not.
