A few days ago, the Brazil Tire Industry Association put forward an initiative to ask the government to increase taxes on Asian tires.
The association said low-cost Asian tires are invading the Brazil market, seriously affecting the industry's operations.
In the initiative, it proposed that the import tax on tires should be increased from 16% to 35%.
The Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services of Brazil is analysing this possibility.
The data shows that between 2017 and 2023, Brazil's tire imports increased by 117%.
In the first five months of this year, the country's tire imports increased by 229% compared to 2017.
China is the largest source of tire imports from Brazil, accounting for about 38% of the market share.
The Brazil Tire Industry Association believes that the government should follow the example of the steel and automotive industries and increase taxes on tires.
After the anti-dumping investigations in the above-mentioned two industries, the investment environment has been markedly improved.
The move was also opposed by the Brazil Tire Importers Association, as well as the Distributors Association.
The two associations pointed out that the tariffs could create inflation, leading to a 25 percent increase in tire prices.
