For those who don't like Tesla, BYD's mid-size battery electric sedan is a good choice

The 2024 BYD Seal Premium EV is further proof of the Chinese brand's rapid pace of improvement. While there are still issues, especially when it comes to software calibration, this is a fast, spacious, comfortable, and well-equipped electric midsize sedan. Suffice it to say, if you're going to buy Seal, then there's also strong evidence that the mid-size Premium is the best option.

BYD Seal Premium 售价多少钱?

The 2024 BYD Seal Premium sits in the middle of the three grades and is priced at just under $60,000 at $58,798, excluding on-the-road fees.

This is well below the Luxury Car Tax (LCT) threshold, making it eligible for various tax benefits.

Its most obvious competitor is the Tesla Model 3, which did sell for less than Tesla before Elon hit the price hard.

There are plenty of options for electric SUVs priced around $60,000, such as the BYD Atto 3, Volvo EX30, Tesla Model Y, to name a few, but only the latter truly rivals the Seal in terms of space.

While it may be in the middle of the pack, the 2024 BYD Seal Premium definitely doesn't skimp on equipment.

Compared to the base Dynamic model (starting at $49,888 plus ORC), the Premium model has some significant mechanical upgrades, such as a larger capacity, faster charging battery, a more powerful electric motor, 19-inch alloy wheels with Continental tyres, and ventilated drilled front discs and fixed rear calipers for enhanced braking performance.

The standard package includes keyless entry/start (but the button must be pressed), electrically adjustable leather front seats with heating, ventilation and position memory (eight-way driver, six-way passenger), dual-zone climate control, LED lighting at both ends, power boot and a full-length glass roof.

Each colour (black, white, grey and blue) is a free choice, with the only Ocean Blue interior costing an additional $1500.

BYD's warranty is technically 6 years/150,000 km, but note that the warranty period varies for different vehicle components. The battery warranty is 8 years.

BYD's service interval is 12 months or 20,000 km, with a total cost of AU$2390 for eight years or 160,000km.

BYD Seal Premium 安全性如何?

The 2024 BYD Seal Premium has received a five-star rating from ANCAP based on the latest and most stringent testing requirements.

Crash safety is particularly excellent, with Seal scoring 89% in ANCAP for Adult Occupant Protection, 87% for Child Occupant Protection, 82% for Road User Protection and 75% for Safety Assist. For more information, see the driving section.

It is equipped with a large number of airbags, including one between the front passengers, as well as all possible active safety abbreviations. There are front and rear cross-traffic alerts and automatic braking, lane departure warning and prevention, traffic sign recognition with automatic speed control, active cruise control, blind spot warning, and driver monitoring.

Parking is assisted by dual-zone front sensors, four-zone rear sensors, and a 360-degree camera.

The technical highlight of the 2024 BYD Seal Premium is the huge 15.6-inch rotating infotainment display that switches from landscape to portrait at the touch of a button.

It's kind of a gimmick, though some people may prefer a horizontal or vertical screen.

At first, the screen feels a little unintuitive, but with some practice, you'll see where things are hidden. To give a few examples: swipe down, there are a lot of one-touch buttons that can achieve many convenient functions; Swipe left for a more comprehensive home screen, but you can also use voice activation.

Android Auto is wireless, but Apple CarPlay is wired, with some native apps like Spotify, as well as built-in satellite navigation, Bluetooth, and FM/DAB radio (no AM).

All music is played through a 12-speaker Dynaudio stereo, and you can choose between dual wireless charging pads or USB-A and -C points on the front and rear.

Head-up displays are also standard on Premium, and cars can be updated over-the-air (OTA).

How long can BYD Seal Premium drive on a single charge?

One of the reasons for upgrading from the base Dynamic to the 2024 BYD Seal Premium is the increased battery capacity from 61.44kWh to 82.56kWh, with the claimed maximum range increasing from 460km to 570km (WLTP).

It also supports faster DC charging speeds, from 110kW to 150kW, while the maximum AC charging rate is 7kW. Therefore, the best case scenario for charging from 0% to 100% on an AC plug is 12 hours, while charging from 0% to 80% of 150kW takes about 30 minutes.

Seal also has vehicle-to-load (V2L) capabilities to power external devices.

Overall, the 2024 BYD Seal Premium is very pleasant. It's quiet and refined, with soft suspension that absorbs bumps and bumps, incredible speeds, and in most (urban) situations, the actual range should easily reach around 500 km.

For less demanding buyers, this is sufficient, but for more demanding tightness, cracks will appear.

Even though the suspension is very soft, the car still wobbles on potholes, and the shock absorbers are so loose that it awkwardly hits them on road sections like speed bumps.

At high speeds, the steering feels weird, not particularly heavy, but it feels hard to control and unnatural.

But by far Seal's biggest flaw is the calibration of its safety system.

Lane Keeping Assist is very overbearing and often reacts strongly to situations where a reaction is not needed at all, but its most worrying habit is to perceive oncoming traffic on a typical two-way street as a threat and try to steer sharply to avoid it.

It remains to be seen if this behavior can be corrected via an OTA update, but it does need to be corrected.

You can turn off these systems at any time, but what's the point of keeping them in that case?

BYD Seal Premium 的内饰怎么样?

One of the selling points of the 2024 BYD Seal Premium over the Tesla Model 3 is its traditional interior. If you can't live with Tesla's minimalist décor, then Seal will make you feel more comfortable.

It starts at the touch of a button, the gear is selected with the joystick, and there are marked buttons on the steering wheel...... It really is like a regular car.

The seats are very comfortable, with plenty of storage space, and the materials feel more than enough for the price, while the Seal's extra-long wheelbase gives it the rear legroom of a luxury sedan, and the rear bench is also very comfortable.

It's a great car to sit in the back seat.

The 400-litre trunk isn't huge, but there's an additional 50-litre storage space in the nose.

我该买比亚迪 Seal Premium 吗?

If you happen to have read our recent BYD Seal Premium vs. Tesla Model 3 test, you'll know that Tesla had a pretty decisive victory – and that was before it had a sizable price advantage right now.

But this should not automatically exclude BYD.

It's got plenty of space, plenty of power, great range, plenty of equipment, and Premium avoids the sporty style of Performance that only disappoints.

Further fine-tuning of the suspension, especially the active safety system, will certainly make it easier to recommend, but even so, it's worth a look if you're not a Tesla type.
