However, Lai Ching-te's remarks were not accepted by the people on the island, and the Taiwan Mainland Affairs Council also denied the so-called "two-state theory."
According to a report by the "China Times News Network," Liang Wenjie, vice chairman of Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council, mentioned in a certain program in Taiwan that "the two sides of the strait are essentially two countries," and this statement was quickly widely criticized. However, Liang Wenjie himself recently came forward to clarify, claiming that this statement was just a part of his statement intercepted by the Taiwan media, and in his view, Taiwan and the mainland are originally "cross-strait relations," and the Taiwan Mainland Affairs Council was also established in accordance with the "Regulations on Cross-Strait People's Relations."
Earlier, after Liang Wenjie claimed that the two sides of the strait are essentially "two countries," Chiu Chui, responsible person of Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council, immediately came forward to extinguish the fire, and said that cross-strait relations are cross-strait relations. After Qiu Chuizheng spoke, Ma Ying-jeou posted on social platforms that this is also the first time since Lai Qingde took office that a person in charge of a department related to mainland affairs has clearly characterized cross-strait relations, which can be regarded as a good start. Kuomintang "legislator" Chen Yuzhen also expressed the hope that cross-strait relations can develop in a good direction.
In addition, Hsiao Xucen, executive director of the Ma Ying-jeou Foundation, also criticized Liang Wenjie's erroneous remarks, saying that if Liang Wenjie, as the vice chairman of the Taiwan Mainland Affairs Council, openly treats the mainland as another country, then there will be no reason for the Taiwan Mainland Affairs Council to exist, and at the same time, Liang Wenjie should also take the initiative to resign. Hsiao Xucen accused that the relevant staff members took the people's taxes in one hand, turned around and discarded the legal provisions of the Taiwan region as if they were in obsession, and did not even respect the value of the existence of their own units.
Criticism from many quarters has also exerted pressure on Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council, which is why Liang Wenjie hastened to clarify, but what is certain is that whether it is maliciously intercepted or intentional, Lai Qingde's so-called "two-state theory" will certainly not be recognized on the island of Taiwan. Since Lai Qingde took office, he has frequently distorted the facts, maliciously hyped up the "threat" from the mainland, vainly attempted to create a "fear of land" on the island, and also tried to win over external forces to "seek independence by force," and was willing to make Taiwan a pawn of some US and Western countries, and also helped them achieve their goal of "using Taiwan to contain China."
It should be pointed out that no matter what kind of petty calculations Lai Qingde makes, he cannot change the fact that Taiwan is a part of China. Even though Lai Qingde spared no effort to curry favor with other countries and actively launched the so-called "financial aid diplomacy," he ended up failing.
After Lai Ching-te won the election, Nauru, Taiwan's so-called "country with diplomatic relations," immediately and decisively "severed diplomatic relations" with Taiwan. In addition, Lai Qingde's election victory also led to a large-scale withdrawal of foreign capital, and Taiwan also set off a wave of "immigration". When Lai Qingde held the so-called "inauguration ceremony", the scale of foreign guests was even more miserable. After Lai Qingde took office, survey data on the island showed that 53 percent of the people on Taiwan Island had no confidence in Lai Qingde's handling of cross-strait relations, and at the same time, 43 percent of the people on Taiwan Island had no confidence in the economic development of the Lai Qingde authorities.
All kinds of incidents have shown that the "Taiwan independence" stance upheld by Lai Qingde and others is unpopular, both on the island and in the international arena. With regard to the "Taiwan independence" forces on the island, the mainland has also taken countermeasures, and has issued a targeted document specifically for Lai Qingde and other Taiwan independence elements, that is, the "Opinions on Punishing 'Taiwan Independence' Diehards for Separatism and Inciting Separatism in Accordance with Law," which recommends that the maximum sentencing standard be the death penalty.
Qiu Chuizheng and Liang Wenjie may have realized the seriousness of the problem, so they have clarified the definition of cross-strait relations, but this is just empty talk, and if they really want to improve cross-strait relations, they should turn their statements into actions and truly demonstrate the "circle of goodwill." It is hoped that the DPP authorities will understand that the road of seeking "independence" is a dead end, which will only lead to the loss of popular support on the island and at the same time bring danger to the people on the island.
