The poetry of the log
This project is the refurbishment of a beautiful two-storey villa in Highgate, north London. Cumbersome planning considerations, overlook windows, freehold flight titles, and existing subsurface restrictions all required meticulous attention from the designers. These complex constraints have resulted in innovative and beautiful architecture that provides enjoyment for this family of four, with abundant light, natural materials, and lush landscaping creating a healthy retreat.
The potential of the development is maximized due to the need for expansion above and below ground, and the clean massing is subtly linked to natural light and craftsmanship. The extension is designed as a series of three rectangular volumes with simple details that extend cascading into the landscaped garden, reducing in size and shape. The tallest volume at the rear is lit by a full-width linear roof that penetrates the center of the plan.
