On June 3, 2024, Section Chief Theresia Niedermüller, on behalf of the State Secretary for Arts and Culture, Andrea Mayer, BMKÖS and Benedikt Föger, President of the Austrian Book Trade Association (HVB), presented certificates to the winners of the competition "The Most Beautiful Books in Austria 2023". The award ceremony took place at Belvedere 21 in Vienna.

An expert jury, consisting of 5 representatives from the publishing, book trade, design and printing industries, selected 15 Honorable Mention entries from 183 submissions in 2023 as the most beautiful books in Austria. BMKÖS also awarded a national prize of €3,000 each to the following three publications:

Andrea Mayer, Austrian State Secretary for Arts and Culture, said: "Year after year, the 'Austria's Most Beautiful Books' competition puts the spotlight on the creative talent behind book design and production. They are responsible for ensuring that the layout, color composition, and feel come together so that our readers end up with a beautiful book in their hands. This creative aspect of book production and the associated skills should be recognized and celebrated. The jury's decision was not easy, as Austria publishes a large number of high-quality books every year, which are popular not only nationally, but also internationally. In recent years, Austrian works have repeatedly won awards in international competitions "The Most Beautiful Books in the World". I would like to congratulate this year's winners and wish them more inspiration and happiness in their future endeavours to create the most beautiful books that will give you a special place on your shelf.

Benedikt Föger, Chairman of the HVB: "The most beautiful books in Austria 2023 are impressive proof that book making is much more than just a combination of words and paper. Each year, this prestigious competition honors works that stand out in terms of artistic conception, perfect creativity and exquisite craftsmanship. The award-winning books are the culmination of creativity, innovation and the courage of publishers. I would like to congratulate all the laureates for their outstanding achievements and their contribution to enriching the Austrian book landscape."

The selection of the most beautiful books in Austria is supported by Salzer Papier, Gerin Printing and the Papyrus bookbinder.

The most beautiful book showcase

The winning books are expected to be exhibited in December 2024 at the Vienna Main Library as part of the exhibition "The Most Beautiful Books from Austria, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands 2023", and will be presented at international fairs such as the Leipzig Book Fair, the Frankfurt Book Fair and Buch Wien 24. More exhibitions are planned.

The "Most Beautiful Books in Austria 2023" contains 6 categories published on January 1, 2023 and December 31, 2023:

● General Literature (Fiction and Poetry Books)

● Non-fiction books, cookbooks and guides, regional and historical illustrated books

● Children's and young adult books, graphic novels

● Contemporary Art Books, Photography Arts, Architecture, Exhibition Catalogs

● Textbooks and school textbooks, scientific publications

● Special works (including ISBNs) and books that are not for sale
