Automobili Pininfarina is poised to make the leap from a single-model, extremely niche manufacturer to a more established supplier of premium cars. The automotive manufacturing division, a subsidiary of the hugely successful Pininfarina design studio, initially produced the Battista electric supercar and its closely related sibling, the limited-edition B95 Spider.

Building an SUV-class model has always been the company's long-term plan, and the company previewed the ideas with the Pura Vision Concept, a compelling "luxury utility vehicle." The production version of the Pura Vision is expected to cost less than the Battista, which costs around 2 million euros, and will remain in the luxury segment in terms of quality and rarity.

Paolo Dellachà: It's been a pretty long journey, like every startup, but our overall structure has been solid from the start for two reasons. First, the power of the brand. We leverage our partnerships with sister companies as well as Rimac's electric technology, and our parent company, Mahindra, has strong synergies. For example, it offers software, which is the support that every car manufacturer needs. It's even more complicated for a supercar.

W*: From the beginning, what was the brand's position in the luxury sector?
PD: Our journey involves real interaction with a network of dealers and customers. We had to fully meet the needs of the luxury market from the very beginning. This means building a one-to-one relationship with our customers, understanding their needs, tastes, and desires.

W*: Who are your customers?
PD: People find us in two ways, either through our dealerships or because they're collectors of other Pininfarina designed cars. The first thing we wanted to do was give them the ultimate driving experience in a 2,000-horsepower sports car. So we're going to give them a very extensive test drive, because the Battista can be very gentle, but it can also be very rough. After the test drive, they really got a sense of how we combine performance with sophistication.
Another point is to understand the design. Pininfarina has a reputation for car design, but we also want potential customers to understand how to build a B95 or Battista according to their taste.

W*: Will you continue to offer opportunities to build single-use cars?
PD: I think it's possible. A combination of design, technology, and customization can add value. This is very important for collectors. Of course, our goal is for them to enjoy the car, but we also need to preserve the collectible value.

W*: Will customers use these cars? Or just collect them?
PD: Admittedly, pure collectors rarely drive this car. Others use Battista almost every day. It is a very comfortable car, even in the city. We make sure that it can have a very wide range of uses.

W*: So what's the plan for future products?
PD: We want to stay in the luxury segment and remain exclusive. [Our next car] will be a limited edition – 100 units, not 1,000 – but it will also be a different type of product, with more seats and a more comfortable experience. It won't be an SUV – we want to build a new category.
Pininfarina has designed beautiful luxury touring cars in the past. This will have to be repeated in the next product, but Pininfarina has always been innovative, even provocative. It is very important to design a product that will remain beautiful for decades - it's all about proportions, the purity of the lines and the quality of the light. For the GT, sportiness and elegance are its basic requirements.

W*: Will it be an electric car like the Battista?
PD: We're looking at more than one [powertrain] possibility. The question is, what do customers want? A lot of people think electrification will [be] [adopted] faster. For Battista it was somehow an easier choice - from day one, we wanted to be the strongest Italian car on the road legally. Electric was, and still is, a must.

PD: Very positive. We presented the car at Monterrey Car Week 2023 and were preceded by some private showcases. As far as Pura's design DNA is concerned, it will be primarily applied to new products. We tried to combine practicality with stunning looks – it's a matter of balance.

W*: What is the expected production schedule? Presumably, 150 units of Battista will be completed by then, so are there plans to replace it?
PD: Let me put it this way. While our goal is to bring new cars to market by 2027, 2030 will mark our company's 100th anniversary. So we're going to do something special. We are also very proud to have won the Red Dot Design Award. Our customer satisfaction has been high since day one – you need this solid foundation to continue to grow in the future.
