Recently, the people of Tengchong Jietou Town, Yunnan Province found an injured "strange bird" in the farmland, and the police arrived at the scene and found that the right wing of the "distressed" bird was drooping, and it was suspected that it was injured and could not fly normally. It was confirmed by the relevant staff that this bird was a black-headed white ibis, a national first-class key protected wild animal. The black-headed white ibis is a large wading bird with a long and downward-curved black beak, which is why it is also called a "hook beak", and it has a bare head and feather on the upper part of its neck, black skin, sometimes embellished with blue, an extended gray ornamental feather on the back and lower part of the foreneck, and a bare dark red skin spot under the wings, which extends along the edge of the wings to the lower sides, and the wingtips that are exposed when flying are black.
The black-headed white ibis inhabits open areas such as lakes, rice paddies, reed ponds, and moist grasslands. They usually move in small groups during the day, but sometimes they can be seen alone near water or in grass. It is silent during its activities, and its cry is hardly audible, and it walks lightly and calmly. They feed on animal foods such as fish, frogs, tadpoles, insects, crustaceans, molluscs, and small reptiles, and sometimes plant foods. Foraging often walks slowly along the water's edge, sometimes inserts his mouth into the water to probe or peck at the surface of the water, and often plunges his long, curved mouth deep into the mud or water to probe food in shallow water or muddy ground, and sometimes even submerges the entire head and neck in the water.
The black-headed white ibis breeds in Heilongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning, they are monogamous, and throughout the incubation period, the male and female birds are very intimate with each other, often touching each other's beaks, or combing their feathers, and sometimes competing with each other to incubate the eggs, which is very loving. Some black-headed white ibises overwinter in Guangdong and Fujian, and are seen in other regions during migration, occasionally in Yunnan.
At present, the injured black-headed white ibis found in Tengchong has been handed over to the Tengchong Beihai Wetland Provincial Nature Reserve Management and Conservation Bureau for further conservation. Although he was able to stand and eat independently, he was injured and needed to be released back into the wild after his recovery was assessed later.
