"Spring River Plumbing" was painted in 1946, the banner, in a semi-raw gray background paper, the lower right depicts the sparkling water surface and the cruising cormorants, and the upper left draws two cottages, a few weeping willows and a few distant mountains, a simple and sparse small scene of the village full of life, jumping into the picture. Similar compositions have appeared repeatedly in Qi Baishi's paintings, including one title: "Drink and dry the net, wash your feet and go to bed, no matter if there is a slanting sun outside his village." It expresses the lazy and secluded life imagined by a homesick old man. This painting "Spring River Plumbing" features a free-flowing cormorant in the water, which has a similar meaning.
