In 1950, the Volunteer Army seized 3,000 blankets, and political commissar Wang Zhi ordered them to be cut and shredded, and all soldiers should have them. History is an indelible mirror, and the heroes of every era are immortal existences. In that treacherous era, New China was in the early days of its founding, and there were constant internal and external troubles. When the Korean War broke out, our leader, Chairman Mao, did not hesitate to take the helm and sent a team of volunteers to the Korean battlefield to confront the powerful American army. In that cold winter, a battle on the shore of Changjin Lake was regarded as the embodiment of the "majestic and high-spirited" of the Chinese soldiers. A "Polar Bear Regiment" of the US army, which was originally unknown, stubbornly resisted our army for four days. Those young lives are forever frozen in the ice and snow, and their bravery has created the eternal legend of the "Ice Sculpture Company".
Whenever I look back on that turbulent era, I will think of the "majestic and high-spirited" volunteer army that crossed the Yalu River. From the perspective of the time, they were exhausted from a hundred battles, but their equipment was poor and cool, and the cold winter wax moon was even more snowflakes. In opposition to it is the US military, which is known as the world's strongest force, which is well-equipped and has advanced weapons, and it has the advantage of time and place even in a harsh environment.
The Chinese have always been a master who can endure hardship. Although our army's preparations for entering the DPRK were somewhat hasty, judging from the battlefield performance, it was not inferior to those "foreign devils" in any way. They used to be the old Eighth Route Army and the New Fourth Army, and they were good at fighting guerrillas. To fight guerrillas, it is necessary to be "as light as a swallow and as light as the wind." The geographical environment of the DPRK is not unfamiliar to them.
The U.S. military doesn't have this advantage over us, don't look at how good their weapons and equipment are, but if they encounter severe cold and complex and changeable environments, how can they have much combat effectiveness? Don't forget, even when they were fighting guerrillas, the Japanese army's equipment was not bad, wasn't it still pressed by us?
That's right, it was not our army that was the first to collapse on the Korean battlefield, but the "Polar Bear Regiment" of the US army, known as the "human wolf commando". In the famous Battle of Changjin Lake, our army twisted this unit all over.
By the way, when it comes to this "polar bear regiment", it is amazing, it has been the treasure of the US military for many years. These guys have been famous since the First World War, when they soared to Siberia, and although they didn't do much in the end, they were also well-known in the international military community. Until World War II, they fought back and forth with the Japanese army in the Pacific Theater and won many victories.
Therefore, when it came to the Korean battlefield, this regiment continued to follow the treatment of priority equipment. What do you think, we who fight guerrillas don't even have many military coats and padded jackets, let alone tanks, planes, and artillery. But the Polar Bear Regiment is different, with heavy machine guns, individual bazookas, tanks, and even helicopter support, in today's parlance, "air supply".
However, no matter how good the equipment is, in the final analysis, people are still fighting. The soldiers of our army are all elite soldiers, after years of civil war, how can they be looked down upon? In this way, the two sides fought in the ice and snow.
Although our army went into battle with bare hands, it still relied on wits to win at the critical moment. Generals such as Song Shilun and Tao Yong used old scheming to surround the US legions, and cut them off from five parts and eliminated them little by little. Do you think, being in an enemy camp but in a dilemma, where is the spare strength to fight?
Within a few days, the originally heroic "Polar Bear Regiment" was close to annihilation. I remember an American soldier who said helplessly at the last moment, "God, if you can fulfill one of my requests, give me tomorrow." Look, not to mention how difficult it is to defeat our army, these guys are even unlikely to survive.
Despite this, the enemy's stubborn resistance was fierce. The entire Battle of Changjin Lake lasted five days, and our army launched more than 20 charges, and the soldiers bravely killed the enemy in the smoke of artillery fire, and I don't know how many young lives withered on Korean soil. In the end, the "Polar Bear Regiment" had only 2,760 fighters, of whom 2,505 were killed or missing, a staggering number at the time.
Although our army was victorious, the price was also heavy. More than 10,000 people were killed or wounded in the Ninth Corps alone, and some units even froze to death in the snow. Their young lives were frozen at that moment, and they wrote the immortal legend of the "Ice Sculpture Company" with an iron will.
After the war, when our army was collecting the remains, it also found a bombed-out American military transport vehicle. It stands to reason that this kind of car is full of arms and ammunition, but who knew that when I opened it, it was stuffed with precious blankets! You can imagine how precious this was to our army at that time!
The temperature was minus 40 degrees, and our army could only wear that kind of thin military uniform, and the cold wind was biting cold. These blankets are pure cotton, soft and warm, and they are enough to save countless lives. But the question is, how to distribute it most equitably? After all, there are a lot of people, how much can each person share after dividing it?
Our army really made a mistake at that time. Later, with a wave of his hand, Comrade Wang Zhi, the political commissar, ordered all these blankets to be cut into pieces to ensure that each soldier could get a piece of the cold thing. Look, isn't it just for those cute young soldiers, even the things of the American army, they can't wait to use them.
