Peng Dehuai, the "old god of war" who was on the battlefield and had a far-reaching reputation, not only turned the tide of the war again and again in the Korean War, but also stepped forward at critical moments and defended the safety of New China with his blood and life. Among them, the Cheorwon Resistance Battle in the Fifth Battle was undoubtedly the most tragic, cruel, and moving battle. 9,000 people participated in the battle, and only more than 700 returned alive, but they wrote the last glory on the Korean battlefield with blood, and how many enemies were annihilated? What's the story behind this?
In 1951, the flames of the Korean battlefield were rekindled. The old man Peng Dehuai kept an eye on the enemy's every move, always ready to strike a heavy punch when the opponent counterattacked. Sure enough, after the change of commander of the US military, they immediately regrouped and eyed the 38th parallel. Faced with the threat of the enemy, Mr. Peng made a desperate gamble and launched a counterattack in advance, which was the famous fifth battle.
At the beginning, our army was like no one, and in the "sparkling" attack, the South Korean army was quickly and completely defeated. But the cunning enemy could not stand it, and the dead end of our army - logistics could not keep up. According to the "magnetic tactics", the enemy retreated step by step, deliberately leading our army away from the supply line until the logistics were unable to support the battle, and suddenly every inch was in chaos.
Mr. Peng realized that a catastrophe was coming, and even issued a signal of "fear" and ordered the whole army to turn around and retreat. But who would have thought that the 180th Division, which was deeply trapped in it, was fiercely shot back by the enemy, and the division was almost completely annihilated, and only a few survived. All the work has been wasted! Just when our army was losing and retreating, we found that there was a "chasing army" behind them, that is, the main force of the enemy, which locked the supply base of our army in Cheorwon and began to frantically outflank.
Faced with the enemy's 50,000 troops pressing forward step by step, Mr. Peng had to personally send the only remaining 63rd Army to block the attack, explaining: "Even if you beat all the people, you have to hold on for 15 days!" A proud oath was thus staged in the most tragic battle of the Korean War, and the 20,000 soldiers of the entire 63rd Army tried their best to deal with the enemy, as if they were fighting for their lives.
In the face of the relentless strafing of tanks, artillery, and aircraft bombing, the 189th Division was invincible, but it also suffered heavy casualties. More than 1,000 warriors were buried alive in the tunnel, and in the end, only more than 700 people were left alive and evacuated from the position. The 188th Division, which took the relay, used the terrain to obstruct the tank process, and successfully blew up hundreds of enemy tanks, but until the last moment, it could not escape the disaster. Division Commander Fu, who was not afraid of danger, simply made a desperate gamble and bombarded all the remaining artillery indiscriminately, and under the cover of artillery fire, the main force of the division broke through and counterattacked, giving the enemy a devastating blow.
At the time of nine deaths, the main force finally arrived, and the 63rd Army's stubborn resistance finally fulfilled its mission. Now that I think about it, these only more than 20,000 soldiers fought to the death with 50,000 enemy troops for more than 10 days, not only successfully blocking the attack, but also severely damaging the main force of the enemy, which makes people awe-inspired. And how many casualties did the enemy have? Did this tragic battle, which decided the direction of the Korean War, also make the world re-understand the courage of Chinese soldiers?
The Cheorwon Resistance Battle is destined to be remembered in the history books. It is the best footnote to Peng Dehuai's "accurate orders and strong commands", and it is also ironclad proof that Chinese soldiers regard death as home. Although it paid a heavy price, it not only made the enemy terrified, but even today, whenever we recall that tragic battle, people spontaneously feel an incomparably noble and moving. The 63rd Army's every chance and the life-and-death game are enough to demonstrate the bloody nature and idealism of the Chinese sons and daughters who never give up. As the saying goes, "blood soaked the foundation of New China", this resistance war is the best footnote. Let us remember the exploits of the martyrs and witness the heroic and fearless spirit of the Chinese soldiers.
