On June 11, Beijing time, according to well-known sports reporter Adrian Wojnarowski, Dan Hurley rejected the Los Angeles Lakers' six-year offer of $70 million, and he chose to continue to coach UCn.

In a statement issued by the school, Hurley said: "I am honored to have had this experience. I couldn't be prouder of the champion culture we've built at UConn. We met as a team before today's training and our focus now is to get better this summer and continue to pursue the title as a team. ”

The Lakers would make Hurley one of the six highest-paid coaches in the NBA. But before negotiations with the Lakers began, Hurley had already secured an offer from UC to become one of the highest-paid coaches in the NCAA, and sources told Wojnarowski that those talks would continue.

Hurley signed a six-year, $32.1 million contract with UConn at the end of the 2022-23 season, and it is reported that his new contract with UConn is now $11 million a year, making him the highest-paid coach in college basketball.

The Angelenos continue to hurt the Lakers by their miserliness with top coaches, which may have shaken his resolve to join the Lakers and have a chance to coach NBA's all-time leading scorer, LeBron James.

As of Monday afternoon, UConn had not officially announced Hurley's decision, but the university posted a picture of Hurley with his hands raised on social media and said in another post that the UConn basketball team's practice at 2 p.m. ET was underway.

A day earlier, Hurley confided that the Lakers had made "compelling reasons" and "compelling visions" for him to become the next coach, but that he loved everything he had built at UConn.

After chasing Hurley in the past few weeks, the Lakers will regroup and continue to invite candidates for interviews in hopes of hiring a coach at the NBA Draft later this month, according to sources.

New Orleans Pelicans assistant coach James Borrego is still expected to remain one of the candidates for Los Angeles, and the Lakers may have their first formal interview with JJ Redick, who was also linked to the job.

Twenty years before the Lakers' failed pursuit of Hurley, they also tried to hire Duke University coach K on a record-breaking contract in 2004, who ultimately chose to stay at Duke.

After winning two consecutive seasons of national championships in history, Hurley has become the most coveted coach in the sport, building a giant team that has swept college basketball – winning the NCAA championship for the first time in 17 years and creating the largest point margin in tournament history (140 points).
