2024 Suzuki Swift New Zealand Launch & First Test Drive

Admittedly, I didn't initially think about flying to Whanganui in a propeller, less modern plane to get to know the all-new Suzuki Swift, but it turns out that Chatham's traditional charm and hospitality do set the perfect foundation for the day ahead.

For those who haven't been there, Whanganui itself is a small town with some quaint but not so epic attractions like playgrounds and 'lifts on the hill', but it's also home to Suzuki, a New Zealand car, bike and boat brand, and while we didn't go there for a visit, or for the headquarters or the town – we seem to have a little bit of both.

The first is Swift. The nameplate of the Suzuki Swift dates back to 1984 and was used as an export name for the Suzuki Cultus, however, despite being four decades old, the popular subcompact car we know today was originally introduced in 2005.

The Suzuki Swift has made significant advancements in design and drivability. Developed with European tastes in mind, this model has a sporty and refined styling that appeals to drivers looking for style and substance. With a variety of engines to choose from, including an impressive 1.6-liter sport, the Swift quickly gained popularity for its drivability and design.

In 2010, Suzuki introduced the second-generation Swift with a focus on fuel efficiency, safety, and handling. Advances in chassis design and engine technology have made it handle better and have lower emissions than the previous generation. This generation of Swift successfully balances performance and efficiency, attracting eco-conscious drivers without compromising driving pleasure.

The previous-generation Suzuki Swift was introduced in 2017 (followed by a facelift in 2021), showcasing enhanced safety features and a new 1.2-liter engine. Suzuki's commitment to innovation has been designed with a sleek exterior, spacious cabin, and advanced standard technology. The addition of a 12-volt hybrid option further optimizes fuel economy and reduces emissions, in line with current environmental trends.

Today, 9 million Suzuki Swifts have been sold since 2005, and today we are celebrating the launch of the fourth new Suzuki Swift.

Suzuki has launched 2 models in specifications, GLS and RSC, and for manual transmission car enthusiasts, the GLS offers a manual transmission car option, which is fantastic.

Visually, the 2024 Swift retains its signature styling while having a more modern look. The front grille features a prominent piano black finish paired with sleek L-shaped LED headlights. At the same time, the rear features a new and unique sloping tailgate design with a wide rear bumper, integrated rear spoiler and black padding to create an overall sporty look.

Inside, the Swift features a two-tone design with the central control buttons facing the driver and a 9-inch infotainment display as standard across the range. The infotainment system supports digital compatibility, Bluetooth, voice recognition, Android Auto, and wireless Apple CarPlay for seamless smartphone integration. In addition, real-time information such as fuel consumption, range, and hybrid energy flow can be accessed through the dashboard.

The front seats of the Swift have been redesigned for better cushioning and a more sculptural look. The interior surfaces feature geometric patterns that add a touch of modernity. RSA models also come with seat heaters for added comfort during the colder months. The Swift offers plenty of storage space, including a spacious glove compartment, console storage, cup holders, and door pockets, while the 265-liter trunk capacity is more than enough for everyday needs.

Whichever model you choose, the new Suzuki subcompact comes with a 3-cylinder 1.2L engine paired with a manual or CVT transmission. Together, they deliver 60.9kW of power and 111.8Nm of torque, and while neither of these performances is earth-shattering, since it is a mild hybrid, it has a fuel consumption of 4L/100km (4.3L CVT) and CO2 emissions of 91-97g/km, which is very good for both the wallet and the environment.

Not only that, but the driving experience is fantastic. We had all the options, but first we opted for the manual GLS because not only is it richer to drive, but the flame-orange bodywork also looks great.

The route is long and we drive along the interesting country roads of Whanganui in a 'follow the leader' fashion. As expected, the Swift's starting speed didn't reach its nominal speed, but I can honestly say that once it got close to the triple figure, it stayed there, showing its excellent handling skills and minimal "babysitter" that comes with its comprehensive ADAS suite.

The GLS uses 15-inch wheels, so it needs more work than its larger (16-inch) siblings, but (as I later found out) is just as solid on asphalt. The assembly and finishes are a big step forward from before, but they don't make you forget which car you're in, and while there's a lot of information on the screen, it's not too overwhelming, even for someone with an older brain like me.

Yes, the refinement increases when you enter the RSC, but this refinement is subtle so that it doesn't appear pompous in the comparison. There are paddles to use, rear cross-traffic/blind spot alert and heated front seats, but the driving itself is very similar, with both compartments equally quiet – only the hum of the 3-cylinder engine can be faintly heard when poked.

We did give it a try, leaning more towards the right way than many "normal" users, but the snappy Swift continues to deliver 5.8ishL/100km messages.
