On May 26, the 2024 Global Skills Challenge came to an end in Melbourne, Australia, and the Chinese team Hu Zehong participated in the welding project to win the gold medal.
On May 30, Red Star News interviewed and learned that 20-year-old Hu Zehong was born in a peasant family in Huili City, Liangshan, Sichuan, and entered China 19th Metallurgical Panzhihua Technician College in 2018 to learn welding.

It is understood that the 2024 Global Skills Challenge is jointly organized by WorldSkills Australia and the Victorian Technical and Further Education (TAFE) Organization. A total of 30 competitions were set up in this competition, with 400 players from 19 countries and regions participating, and the Chinese team sent 9 players to compete in 9 events.
The welding project of this challenge is divided into four modules: low-carbon steel assembly welding, pressure vessel assembly welding, aluminum alloy structural welding, and stainless steel structural welding, which the contestants are required to complete within 18 hours. The competition is difficult and intense, and the players must have a very high level of technical skills. Hu Zehong competed with the world's welding technology elites, and successfully won the championship with his superb welding technology and stable competition mentality.
In 2004, Hu Zehong was born in a rural family in Huili, Liangshan. Before coming into contact with welding, in order to reduce the burden on his family, Hu Zehong often helped with farm work at home. In September 2018, he entered Panzhihua Technician College of China 19th Metallurgical Corporation, and as soon as he entered the school, he directly applied for the senior class of welding technology and began his welding career.

In order to learn from Zhou Shuchun, the gold medal coach in the national welding field, he worked hard to seize every opportunity to exercise and learn, practiced the basic skills of welding desperately, and finally entered the welding elite class of Panzhihua Technician College with the first place and became Zhou Shuchun's closed disciple.
In the subsequent various vocational skills competitions, Hu Zehong made great achievements, and in October 2020, he participated in the first "Panxi Craftsman Cup" Vocational Skills Competition and won the third prize of the welding project; In November 2020, he participated in the Panzhihua Secondary Vocational School Skills Competition and won the first prize of welding technology (individual); In June 2021, he participated in the Sichuan Vocational College Skills Competition (Secondary Vocational Group) and won the first prize in the welding technology competition; In September 2023, he participated in the 2nd Vocational Skills Competition of the People's Republic of China and won the gold medal in the welding project (World Championship selection).

Behind the success is hard work day after day. In the splash of welding sparks, Hu Zehong kept groping, although he was wearing thick overalls, the welding slag still kept falling on his body, often old injuries were not healed, and new injuries fell. To this day, he still has scars on his hands from welding burns, and his fingers have been deformed by thousands of exercises. In his opinion, these are small things, and these scars are more like his own medals.
It is reported that in September this year, Hu Zehong will represent the Chinese team to participate in the welding project of the 47th WorldSkills Competition in Lyon, France.
